Stand Mount Speakers for 300 DR / 252

Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 08 April 2016

I think I am going to start demo-ing some stand mount speakers and wondering what I should put on the short list... budget is around 5K - 10K (Canadian). My system is a 300 DR / 252 (sources NDX>Hugo TT / Rega RP 10 / Superline / Supercap). Listening room is small-ish... 12 feet x 13 feet x 9 feet ceiling height.

Would prefer to not have a sub in the room if possible. The only product that I know will be included in my testing is the Focal Sopra 1... which is at the top of my budget range.

Current speakers are Proac DR30's which I will be keeping and eventually pressing into service on a 2nd system.

Some great reviews coming out of Axpona for the Raidho D1.1 and XT-1. Although the D1.1 are pushing $30k with stands and the XT-1 at $8.5k with stands while being run with $100k+ worth of electronics and cables.

Mmm, just had a little peek on Google at the XT-1's and it threw up a you tube review of them at a show.  Even from just listening via you tube on headphones, you can hear those little speakers really have something special about them.  I'd be very tempted to investigate them further if I was in the market for speakers.

Unexpectedly, I've heard the Franco Serblin Accordo and found it beautiful and sounding great.

Same tweeter as the top of the line D5. Only down side is little to no bass. Think it only goes down to 80hz.

Yes, if anything that would always be their weak point, they are fairly tiny! I suppose that's one reason they used that acoustic Gary Jules track in the demo, but the voicing sounded quite full bodied none the less.

If that's the video I've seen those are the X-1 not the XT-1. I was told today the XT-1 was sounding very good. Also said the XT-2 was very impressive. That is at the top of my list right now for possible future upgrade. Also said the D1.1 was much better than the D1. Said it was sounding like a floor stander today. The .1 upgrade must be very good. Better be considering the price.

I just put my 300 back into my second system - outing the NAP150 - 252/300 into Harbeth Monitor 30's on Target stands. They really showed their appreciation

Curiously, I too have heard a pair of M30.1s a couple of days ago, driven by a rega Brio 3, and they too showed appreciation..

ZHB, so what did you make of the Sopra 1s?

Chris, you are showing rather an interest in the Sopras! Surely not.....

Nigel, Not really. My dealer played me his Statement pre and NAP500 system into Sopra 2s yesterday and enthused about the 1s in the other room as I was on the way out. Available in a very French looking orange (to my eye) apparently.

Besides, ZHB posted a week ago. Just hoped he'd had some dem action by now.

Crikey, Chris. I bet that sounded mind-blowing.

Heard the Raidho D1.1s at Axpona, initially very impressive, but after a while the one-note bass thud made the beauty of the rest of the range less than persuasive. Especially for the price. Among the stand-mounted I found the Enigmacoustics M1 Mythology absolutely jaw-dropping, and with the tuned, inflected bass that the Raidho lacked. Much less expensive too ($15,000 or so with stands). Of course you don't get the established brand.

Nope. Pretty astonishing, seamless top to bottom, integrated, a hewn from solid sound, as if all the components were designed to work together which, of course, they were. A sound that is a massive tribute to Naim and Focal's designers, engineers and technicians in terms of what is doable.

The room was immense compared with my 15m2, and with high ceilings, I'll guess at double the height of mine. Depite sitting perhaps fifteen or sixteen feet from the giant black Sopra 2s I still found them oppressive. On top of which, whatever they are driven with, the Sopras have such a different presentation to my SBLs, which have a presentation I love.

Consequently, I felt instantly more engaged when I dropped the stylus in the groove of my Record Store Day new purchase, on getting home. So, ninety grand saved.

Apologies to OP.

I haven't actually listened to anything as yet... but I have compiled a list for future reference when / if I want to pursue stand mounts.
