Mu-So QB gripe

Posted by: DUPREE on 08 April 2016

I wanted to put this in the "suggestion box" as I saw the Forbes review had the same complaint that I do. The QB has been awesome and like I am sure many Naim customers are doing I use this as my bedroom system. I am 99.9999% satisfied and think it is brilliant, what would be terrific the next update is if it had a headphone jack. Since it is a small room system/office system etc it would be so wonderful if when the time dictated the my-so could output to headphones. Otherwise outstanding work..

Presumably then the Bluetooth compatibility is one-way - input only? What about the multiroom function and wireless HPs?

Personally I don't do these things, get your point, but just wondering if you've got options with the existing Qb.

My gripe with Naim is over the fact that there is no remote with the QBC. Having moved over to Naim last year and purchased the larger Muso with a remote, my wife and I were really happy with the machine. No trailing wires was a plus for one. When the QB came out decided to get it for the kitchen in place of a pure Sensia radio. Got it last Saturday and was truly amazed to find that there was no remote. Granted its not essential as we both have the app. on our phones but for visitors or guests its impossible for them to change radio stations without a remote. They will not have the app on their phone. Rang Naim support this Monday morning and yes its true, there is no remote supplied with the QB. Was it intended to supply one eventually...no they are not released yet...it is intended to release them at a future unknown date. So the QB can be only used by a person who has the app downloaded for the purpose of listening to internet stations. I feel as a new customer to Naim that this is rather mean, a remote is not such an expensive piece of kit  taking into account the price paid for the Muso QB, Request that the authorities review this situation as purchasing a Muso QB is only useful to a person who has a smart phone or tablet. I went for the QB instead of a Sound touch wave radio from Bose, frankly now if this is not reviewed it would seem to me that perhaps I made a mistake...would hate to think so.

I believe you can order a remote for £9.99. While it doesn't cover all the presets, you can switch between presets 1 to 5 by pressing the radio symbol on the top. I don't think a missing remote (which 90% of people will never use) is a deal breaker.

The NAIM remotes from the classic series are compatible. I can use the remote from the NAC-N 272 with the QB without issue.

About the only thing you can do with the remote that you cannot do from the Mu-so itself (either version) is change the Naim illumination. To cycle round the preset radio stations just press radio on the control wheel.

Unfortunately the muso QB is only my second Naim product the first being the Muso last year. Thank you Hungry halibut, that suggestion is really helpful. I do not see on any advertisements for the Muso QB that no remote is supplied or that it costs more. . Is it not like selling you a pair of shoes and charging extra for the laces....or a car without a spare wheel  or a coat without buttons?

The only problem I guess is that it's not possible to choose the station freely outside the presets (which on the other hand should not be a surprise since there is no display).

Posted on: 11 April 2016 by Kittytwister

I understand that but one has up to approx. 30 internet stations saved on the app and on the muso and if  I type them up on a page and leave it near the Muso, a person who wishes to listen to a particular station can scroll down using the remote to find that station. Agree it could be difficult to find it  due to no display but at least they can have an idea from what is broadcast.

I guess that when you are trying to get down to a selling price, every little helps. It's no different to needing to add metallic paint to a car, or putting up with boring red. To chose music from the nas, or to pick something from Tidal, you are always going to need the app. In our house, Hilary and I both have iPhones and iPads, and the boys have the andoid app on their phones so they can choose music to listen to while washing up.

A possible alternative that would be more full featured is to buy a cheap or second hand android tablet and use that as a remote. Old Nexus 7 or other pretty decent tablets can be had on the cheap now, it will give the full experience and you don’t really have to invest very much.

Have to say tried the suggestion above  of pressing on the radio button of the wheel and yes it does work , I can scroll through the first five stations on the list. This information is invaluable and am really grateful for it.

Pleased it helped. Just have to think carefully about choice of top five favourites!

Just to acknowledge that Hungryhalibut suggested this first.

They should supply a remote for the Qb because the remote for the Muso is a cheap and tacky. Infact when "what Hi Fi" did a review of the Muso they gave it 5 stars for everything, but on the downside they said the remote was a cheap affair for a nearly £900 unit.

Even without seeing the screen, I manage to change among the 5 favorit stations, most of the time it works.

The fact that there is no remote supplied is stated on the Naim website.

One design thing I do not understand is to place the plugs at the back of the unit. Using the sites under the grills would make it much easier to get to the plugs, especially for users like me, who uses the analogue input frequently.

Leaving the leads plugged in would be an easy way to get over the rear access problem.

Also, i doubt the remote was of primary concern for Naim, as the units were designed to be used with the App.

Plus, not having all and sundry have access to it when they visit is a bonus IMO.

The Muso remote is not a "cheap and tacky affair". Yes it is plastic, it is not milled aluminium. But it is well labelled, ergonomically reasonably sound, and works.

Actually a lot of cars these days the spare wheel is a cost option!

But a remote that does not allow one to re-select the radio option is most definitely a cheap and very nastily tacky affair.

Nick, what do you mean? Can't you just scroll through the inputs to radio, using the input buttons?

Using the *radio* left and right buttons on the remote.

Ahah, I had not even thought of using that approach. It does work.

Ahah, had not tried that. Fantastically obvious isn't it? Why doesn't the input option scroll through to the radio option, though. I still contend that the supplied remote is cheap, nasty and tacky. It does not compliment, nor complement, the MuSo
