New Xps dr or Expensive Hi-fi Rack?
Posted by: wenger2015 on 17 April 2016
I'm looking ahead regarding my next upgrade. Purchase an XPS dr or a high spec Rack?
After reviewing all the various threads on the forum, I can see pros and cons for a High Spec Rack, and generally only positive Views on XPSdr.
My inclination is to go with an xps dr, as I think that would yield the most significant improvement...
But would appreciate imput from forum.
System is CDx2, Nap 250dr, Nac 282, Hicap dr, Sopra2's ,Project 2 Xperience X pack TT, Dynavector, Apollo Rack
You need the new dr Gorilla Glue
Araldite...gorilla glue ( dr).... I would go out and buy both, but I've accidently got myself stuck to the wall ![]()

Wenger, I'll have to get a decent rack before I get my XPS DR. I have to admit the more I look at it, the more I'm tempted by a fraim lite.
All the reviews are very positive regarding the fraim lite, although some on the forum suggest it's inferior to the full fraim, but no doubt theirs a considerable price difference.
Yeah the full Fraim is nearly twice the price of the lite
A good rack is certainly a necessity, but I'm not convinced that paying 2k plus is money well spent.
Where as with an xps their is no question about its value.
Yeah 2k is a lot. And there's no denying how good the XPS is
Just remember before you purchase a rack, you must take a hearing test ![]()
Sorry Wenger I didn't catch that
Apologies Finkfan, I'm quietly trying to book a holiday ![]()
I do like this setup. Plonked on a bench and the boxes not even aligned!

Brilliant ![]()
Might as well use Bose then ![]()

Does aligning them make a big difference then? And wo's to say that the arrangement isn't carefully aligned for best sound?

Well linn have never cared about or advocated racking. More because of low WAF and the impact on sales than anything else.
By that rationale, those boxes should be fine on the back of a teal crystaline donkey.
Re: Fraim, yes it is expensive but I have demoed racks and a rack can easily give as much improvement as a major component upgrade. In the case of high quality, and therefore sensitive, gear, the improvement can be very great indeed. I absolutely would not be surprised if a decent rack outperforms an XPSDR in terms of sonic impact. And having an XPSDR myself, I know full well the impact it makes.
Like anything, your ears are key. If you don't hear a difference, no one should shoot you for it. The only foolish thing would be to a) pre-decide the outcome based on preconception or b) not hear a benefit but buy something anyway because others told you it was better.

So I'm wondering at what point a full fraim is worth the outlay? Would you say that for my system, SN, CDX2 the addition of an XPS at some point, a fraim lite would be sufficient? Or would all Naim equipment at any level benefit from a full fraim?
It seems that a good quality rack, with good isolation ect is important , it doesn't have to be fraim, although no doubt fraim is going to be good, I'm sure all naim boxes are viewed as high level, and probably need a top quality rack.
Can you afford Fraim? If you can then just buy it to shut everyone else up if nothing else.
Joking aside, I've just bought a base and 3 level full fat fraim. It's a lot of money but I'd just keep on itching if I'd bought anything else. Cry once and all that!!!

I'm actually beginning to think that buying a Fraim is probably the best option, swallow hard and pay the money......my only problem is I definitely want an xpsdr as well......maybe I'm just going to have to get both![]()

A tube of Anusol would have been cheaper.

Definitely! It appears to be *a very important consideration* judging by the photo's in the system pics thead.

Actually, I hadn't thought of that ...

Bear in mind, their are other products available, although Anusol may well be the dr version, maybe HH is going on many years of personal experience ![]()
That level of application/speakers pleads for a XPS to really exploit what the CDX2 can deliver.
