New Xps dr or Expensive Hi-fi Rack?
Posted by: wenger2015 on 17 April 2016
I'm looking ahead regarding my next upgrade. Purchase an XPS dr or a high spec Rack?
After reviewing all the various threads on the forum, I can see pros and cons for a High Spec Rack, and generally only positive Views on XPSdr.
My inclination is to go with an xps dr, as I think that would yield the most significant improvement...
But would appreciate imput from forum.
System is CDx2, Nap 250dr, Nac 282, Hicap dr, Sopra2's ,Project 2 Xperience X pack TT, Dynavector, Apollo Rack
The rack will be fine. What you have to do is run your kit on the new rack for a week and then take it all off the new rack and put it on top of the microwave stacked nice and high while heating up a tin of soup. You will find the difference amazing and will soon have it all safely back in the rack before you run out of anusol.
Fraim, fraim, fraim, fraim, fraim...

AndrewG posted:Wenger, I'm sure you have (finally) made the right decision to get the xps dr. As most on this forum seem to agree it will make a very significant improvement to your cdx2. While I think a better rack will also be very worthwhile, then no doubt the Fraim is among the best. BUT given your prolonged deliberations and uncertainty on which to go for and how much to spend perhaps you should consider some of the cheaper options. I note Fraimlite and Quadraspire are on your list, but what about Isoblue? I had the same dilemma a few years ago and bought the Isoblue in black. To me this looks good with Naim's black boxes, sounds fine, easy to assemble, much cheaper than Fraim, which in my view is most unattractive. I have also seen and heard Isoblue at various dealers over the years. There are no doubt various reasons for this but I don't think dealers would use them if they did not perform well.
Good luck with your deliberations!
Andrew
Isoblue was on my short list, it was 50/50 with the quadrasphire SVT.....perhaps I should check out the black?

Any particular flavour of soup? ![]()
Full fat, 105 octane, fully leaded. None of that mocca-cappucino-ultraskinny-latte-soy-milk nonsense

may well happen at some future point if rack does not come up to the high expectations that have been suggested.
Will be happy to report back, when I will either be laughing or crying....
They will be tears of joy, I am sure. Can't go wrong with XPSDR and full fat Fraim. What is confusing me is all this talk of Anusol and the prospect of taking it orally. Must be something peculiar to folk in Somerset I guess.
Confused of Chesham. ![]()

Unfortunately their are plenty of peculiar folk in Somerset
A happy ending. Or is there more ?

Just worked my way through this thread - phew!
As HH says, I have a Bamboo Quadraspire SVT with bronze cones. It definitely bests Isoblue and Hutter and comes close the FF Fraim, at a much lower price. The bamboo and cones made an astonishing improvement to my LP12 and also transformed the NDS. It is also much nicer to look at than the Fraim, although this is difficult to capture in a photograph.
Keith
Having compared both on a demo, I would say the Fraim is slightly more exciting and detailed, whereas the SVT flows better and has a nicer tone. You have to get bamboo and cones to achieve this level of performance.
wenger2015 posted:ChrisH posted:Having added both to my NDX/SN2 over the last year or so I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either purchase Wenger, congrats on your purchase.
And Im sure the aforementioned cream won't be required......
Order will be placed shortly, just need to decide on which rack.....naim fraim, naim lite, or quadrasphire SVT ?
Well in my case it was none of the above!
I went with Hutter Racktime. I have no doubt that Fraim is the Rolls Royce of racks for Naim gear, but it is too big for my listening room (which is also the main living room). The Hutter ticked all the boxes for me in terms of aesthetics, size and system improvement. Other brands are also available ![]()

That's exactly what I'd like to do, have a demo of both, my preference would be for a softer tone, lots of depth and warmth, if that's possible to achieve with a rack?

I was wanting to keep a shortlist of just 3 racks, but not wishing to be narrow minded, and not ever wanting to upgrade the rack, I want to get it right first time, I will investigate ![]()
Just been reading the new thread on hearing loss....I hope all you experienced forum members who recommend the huge difference a quality Rack can make ......have not just had the wife messing with your hearing aids...![]()

Onions again. When I have a big bout of tinnitus I find wrapping fresh onion rings around my ears helps.

The Hutter is lovely, and I had it before my SVT. It had to go because it didn't go well in the room when we redecorated. The SVT sounded better, which was a bonus, and also had space underneath for wires, which the Hutter doesn't.
I would not want a Fraim unless I didn't need to look at it from the side, as it looks really weird, and it is very large. Sounds good though.
