New Xps dr or Expensive Hi-fi Rack?

Posted by: wenger2015 on 17 April 2016

I'm looking ahead regarding my next upgrade. Purchase an XPS dr or a high spec Rack?

After reviewing all the various threads on the forum, I can see pros and cons for a High Spec Rack, and generally only positive Views on XPSdr.

My inclination is to go with an xps dr, as I think that would yield the most significant improvement...

But would appreciate  imput from forum.

System is CDx2, Nap 250dr, Nac 282, Hicap dr, Sopra2's ,Project 2 Xperience X pack TT, Dynavector, Apollo Rack

Looks the same as your old one in your pics.  But if you look closely you will spot one defining detail.

Pointy wheels?

Get a bamboo SVT with bronze cones. You will get close to Fraim performance at a huge discount, which would pay for some Super Lumina cables!

Keith

Still best advice is audition, and compare with existing rack, including existing rack fitted with spikes in place of castors.

interestingly, HiFi Sound rate the Atakarma Evoquue best, above QUadraspire (but they haven't compared Fraim)

Yes, Atacama is a good cheaper bet, but doesn't have the bronze cones which make an astonishing difference.

I've had a brainwave. If you turn your current rack upside down the castors will be at the top so will no longer cause you any problems. Then because you no will no longer be using the castors you can put them on your new Quadraspere and use that as a tea trolley.

The defining detail is that nothing is within the shelves. It's doing its job - whatever that is - without the necessary incumbents of the job at hand. A win win situation for a hifi support. Any theoretical and practical problems are entirely out of its field. " Hey every one I am a hifi rack" it's saying. But really knows f#ck all about anything because it's not got any hifi in it.

The question would be whether one, with or without bronze, is better than another - bronze is just one factor.   However the Altacama Evoque special edition does apparently have bronze.

So it does (just checked their website). In that case, the Evoke would be a very interesting alternative. I was lucky enough to have a demo of the SVT as I live near Bath. Sadly, rack demos are not always easy to arrange.

Interesting that the Altacama is rated higher then the quadrasphire......that's surprising.....I would have thought it was the other way round...

IB, I suspect you are partly right.  I think the important bit is that vibration be minimal, highly linear, and not at the bass frequencies.  So likely solution is light, stiff, and very highly linear.
