No sound on Mu-so used as Soundbar

Under the Netflix and Naim Streamer issue topic Weegie posted:
I have a Panasonic smart tv with the Netflix app included but this method of connection still does not give audio to the muso using the optical connection. My only method of successful connection thus far is to use an Apple TV box. This works with no audio loss to the muso.

I am copying my response under this new topic in the hope it will avoid confusion with the iOS Netflix App issue being discussed there. I hope you do not mind Weegie.

The most likely explanation of getting no sound with digital input from TV to a Mu-so is given by Phil Harris in his featured topic on the Streaming forum: The Mu-so - in common with our other streamers - does not have any form of multi-channel audio decoding and so expects a regular PCM stereo audio input. If fed with bitstream Dolby Digital or DTS then the unit will either output 'noise' or will be silent.

Apparently some Panasonic TVs, and possibly others, only switch to PCM on a per video basis.

In an attempt to reduce the confusion being caused by discussing two different issues on one thread, I have taken the liberty of copying this note under a new topic under this Forum even though it has nothing directly to do with streaming.

Hi Roger,

Bizarrely I've signed up for this forum to ask exactly the same question!

It's unbelievably frustrating how it won't work through the Panasonic app whereas ATV (I'll do away with anyway as it doesn't support 4k Netflix content) and other smart Netflix apps work fine. Even switching to PCM doesn't make any difference.

I wonder if I'll just be stuck with listening to Netflix output through the TV speakers...as I said frustrating!

Saying that i'll probably upgrade my BT box to an ultra HD one and hopefully that will work.

I had exactly same problem with my Panasonic plasma and Monitor Audio soundbar. Netflix will not play sound via the Home Cinema settings via which any soundbar connects with the Panasonic. My solution was to get rid of Netflix!!

Surely the issue cannot be with Netflix?

By process of elimination, the problem is with Panasonic.

(Netflix app) Apple TV > Muso = Good (no 4k support)

(Netflix app) PS4 > Muso = Good (no 4k support)

(Netflix app) BT YouView  > Muso = Good (no 4k support with standard box)

(Netflix app) Panasonic > Muso = No sound

The Panasonic App is the only one that supports 4k Netflix hence why I really want to get it working although if I upgrade to a BT Ultra HD box then I'm guessing that will solve the issue.

Agreed! I spent hours in communication with Panasonic uk, Monitor Audio and Richer Sounds (suppliers of both tv and soundbar) to no avail. Panasonic blamed Netflix, although friends with Samsung tv's and same soundbar don't have this problem!

It's annoying, but the only solution is to change your brand of tv - Panasonic are unwilling to, or incapable of, coming up with a firmware fix.

There is a little Gefen DAC called the 'Digital Audio Decoder' which will decode Dolby Digital and output it as 2 channel analogue, which can be fed into the mu-so via an RCA - 3.5mm jack cable. An ugly solution, but a solution that works.

Probably not the same issue but i have an older Panasonic Plasma that is hooked up to a Muso via optical, and when using Freesat, the HD channels do not output any sound at all, and i have to use the SD channels to hear anything.
