Volume setting number limit on NAC N 272?

Posted by: blownaway on 14 April 2016

At last I'm now enjoying my new Naim system. I'm just 3 days into my listening experience and I'm really impressed with what I'm hearing! My basic question is the volume on the N 272 is on a numbering system.  How high does the volume number go? 100?

111  ;-)  Why not try winding it up as far as it will go?  Advisory, maybe try that while you're not playing anything.

Indeed, it's 100. As I found when my son took over the system with Foobar, it's bloody loud.

Mine goes to 60 - I limited this due to certain little people hanging around my hi fi each day.

Although 100 is the max, if you're worried about making your ears bleed, you can limit it to whatever you want by going to Settings > Audio Settings > Max Volume and reducing it to suit. I, too, limit mine to 60. The balance control is hidden there too, should you ever need it.

What I have found with my 272 much more than any other amp or pre -amp, is the variation of the volume level either required or the max you really want to go to before things get just a bit too ear bleedingly loud, between the input sources. So for my vinyl input via Stageline 60 is still fairly comfortable but I would not get near 60 on my Cdx2 via RCA analogue input. I recognise that different loads/ impedance etc are factors here but it does make it difficult to set a maximum. Thankfully no children, well at least not under 28, to play with the volume control.

Are you aware that you can use 'Input Trim' to adjust the relative volume of different inputs?

Question off the thread:

Olek - has your XPS arrived yet?

Being digital is it possible to change format..?. I've always thought pre amps that go the - db to 0 db unity gain more exotic than 0 to 100 and 7 o'clock to 5 oclock.

Ultimately it's the same thing. Pre-amp attenuates a signal for the power amp. So actually minus dB is a bit more logical.

I'm taking it home today. Before that I have to suffer whole day in the office. But happy anyway Thanx for asking.

You can make it! Only 8 more hours to go

I had to skip one rather important call at work to collect my xps before store closing but now I have it connected and I have to admit it put a big smile on my face. First hour or so was terrible but after that it started to sound great.

HH, how do you run foolbar on it? Don't we do that only with USB DAC?

Posted on: 16 April 2016 by hungryhalibut

We don't actively try to run Foobar: my son was trying to stream from the server to his computer, using Foobar, and somehow managed to turn up the volume to 100, causing me to nearly jump out of my skin. It's definitely a good idea to limit the volume.

I had a similar shock last year at the end of a firmware update which caused a factory reset. This set the volume limit back to 100 and turned off the mute button at the same time.

On what level you listen habitually? My favorite parameters are between 24 (in early morning) and 42 when i want a big and loud soundstage

Posted on: 16 April 2016 by Olek_K

33 is ok, above 42-45 is getting too loud on some tracks
