iCloud

Decided to retire my iPad3 (16GB), since the grandkids had managed to fill the memory with their games etc.  Why their games?  Well, when they descend upon us, the first thing that happens is that they nick my iPad and iPhone and disappear with them, coming back to ask if they could have xyz game installed.  Being a softy, I usually let them.

Anyway, went to the Apple Store yesterday and got  64GB iPad Air 2.  Looked at the iPad Pro, but decided it was complete overkill for what it would be used for.

I keep copies of some Numbers spreadsheets and Pages files in iCloud, but when I came to try to access them on the new toy, they got stuck in updating file mode.  Eventually (after an hour!), I switched it off, and looked for solutions on the web.  Did as suggested by Apple Help (basically deleted the files, and reloaded them into iCloud from my iMac using backups).  Didn't work - iCloud refused to upload them, with various errors etc.  Logged out of and back into iCloud on all my devices.  Didn't help.  Tried uploading a new files to iCloud.  Uploads weren't accepted.  Checked that my wifi and ethernet broadband connections were working (they were perfectly OK)

Eventually got fed up and retired for the night.   Today, I sat down, managed to successfully upload a couple of test files, so copied my desired files back into iCloud, and all is now working.

My conclusion is that iCloud itself must have decided to have a temper tantrum just as I was changing one of my devices.  VERY ANNOYING.

Now to wait and see how long it takes on the new iPad for Safari to start grinding to a halt, making me switch wifi off/on to get at some web pages.

I find Dropbox much better than iCloud for sharing documents across OSX and iOS devices. It just seems so much easier to open any document on any device compared to iCloud. Better still, I use a little freebie called Mac Drop Any. This makes any folder of your choice (for me it's the whole Documents folder) and the Dropbox folder into one and the same thing. So if I save a doc on my MacBook, I can view it immediately on my iPhone, iPad, or any other computer. No need to transfer it to Dropbox manually, it's already there. I thought the whole point of iCloud would be to do this, but it just can't.
