250.2 to 250DR upgrade
Posted by: Arnsider on 23 April 2016
Following the forum regularly, its easy to see at a glance how well thought of the 250DR is. At the risk of sounding foolish .....if I upgrade my 250.2 to DR spec does it become exactly the same spec as a spanking new factory fresh 250DR or do some components differ in any way? Anyone done the upgrade recently? My 250.2 is a 2008 model.

Sorry Simon. Naim told me only last week that they could not even predict how long the current general service shop backlog would take. The reply was very much in the vein of "We'll get to it when we get to it"
Ok, thanks, do you know if they are using a booking system like they used with the PSU DR mod backlog a few years back? it sounds perhaps not ..

Well they are definately using some system. They appear to have given different dealers different start dates for accepting serial no. registrations. When they are at least ready to accept shipment of the unit they contact the dealer who then gets gets the unit from the customer and ships it on.
My dealer warned they won't accept units not packed in a Naim box with the right padding either so if you had to get shot of the original boxes you may need to borrow a Naim box from the dealer who will repack the unit to avoid rejection (as I have to).
My 250.2 was registered on the fist day available to my dealer (March 17th) but my dealer doesn't even know if the serial no. will come up next week, next month, or next year despite CCing me on all communications with Naim.
So there is an advantage in knowing/having the 'right' dealer. ![]()

I suppose. Though it seems fairly random and arbitrary how they have divided it up. Which is fair. Customers are not more or less valuable/entitled according to their dealer. At least, I certainly hope not.
£1495 for service and DR upgrade as of a few weeks ago - more than last year.
Well, today I shipped my 250.2 to AVOptions for the DR upgrade. Naim have shipped a set of Kits to North America. So, I can look forward to a 250DR returning to me later in the month.
In the meantime I am now listening to my system with UnitiQute (24/192) as power amp. This little guy sounds so very nice, I don't feel at all concerned about the wait. The music is still very fine indeed. So, system is MacMini (Audirvana+) -> nDAC/555PSDR -> 282/Supercap -> (DIN4-2-RCA) UQ Analog In -> CP Dynamics speakers; the UQ uses a Deep Cryo treated Tibia power chord (from AVOptions).
For comparison, I tried UPnP from Asset into the UQ via ethernet. This also provides very enjoyable music, but without the sophistication of the 5 box source. Naim really make great gear!

My newly upgraded 250DR has been playing music for two days now, and it sounds absolutely amazing. It seems to become more refined the more music I play. Thank you to Chris West at AVoptions for skilled craftsmanship and excellent service. Thanks to Naim for making this remarkable new technology available to owners of older equipment. For me, this was well worth the wait, and the best sound quality per cost of any upgrade I have made.
I highly recommend the upgrade to owners of 250.2. If you are in the USA, I highly recommend Chris West and AVoptions.

I've just been given a slot for my 300. They say it will take 3 weeks, which is consistent with CharlieP's experience. Have Naim sorted out excessive delays? Have others here had any recent experience?
