Speakers for very low level listening
Posted by: Chrissw19 on 24 April 2016
Following my previous post, it looks like I listen at least 15 to 20 dB lower than the other contributors (between 50 and 60 db). I mainly listen to my Harbeth P3 (latest model). Are there any speakers that would perform better at these levels?
Thanks!
I currently use a 202/200 w/hi-capdr. My speakers are Harbeth 30.1 (35th anniversary). Alot of my listening is at relatively low levels, and I find they work very well that way, perhaps a home demo can be arranged. For a # of reasons,I had to buy w/out a demo but I find they work well at low levels
The Blumenstein speakers are great at low levels. Price is right too. No crossover for the win!

Sorry, I have no experience with the M30.1.

Ok. It would really be interesting to have them side by side on a shootout. :-)
The LS5/9 seem interesting but it is not easy to say if the price difference with the M30.1 is justified. According to their website, they do not seem to share the same dealers than Harbeth (at least in the surrounding London area) so side by side listen will not be easy to organise.
Jan, any chance you will be auditioning the Graham LS5/8 model? As you know, also a 2-way, but with a 12" woofer--might be nice...
... might be dangerous !

Sort of Chihuahua size then.

I'd agree with that, having owned both, but particualrly the Shahinians and - strangely enough - the bigger they are the better they perform at low volume, retaining surprising realism. The Diapason are astonishing...

Avoid Naim amplification for low level listening. Get yourself a cheapo amp with a 'loudness' button. Naim is tempremental at normal listening levels, let alone low. It will be super-cheap comparatively and have 'stand by' that won't suck up your electricity.
