Getting excited (NDX)
Posted by: al9315 on 27 April 2016
The day is looming - Friday !
My electrician is coming on Friday to install ethernet runs - QNap --> NDX (have put a switch in)
I am trying to be ready to GO !
Have QNap with Minimserver installed (which at the moment I do not understand properly) - have copied a few hundred Cds using dbPoweramp onto my PC - copied a sample selection to the server - have 2 backup copies of all Cds
I have downloaded the Naim app to my tablet and when loading it, get a screen stating one has a Muso - which I do not
Is it the case I can do no more until NDX is actually switched on - or can I configure/test anything else ?
and any other tips ?
Thanks
Al
Pending congratulations on your forthcoming happy event on Friday.
The Muso thing is a bit of a nuisance when you don't have one, but hey-ho. When the NDX arrives a setting in the Naim app to help ................ Settings>Input Settings>MultiRoom = off
What amp(s) do you have (your profile is empty - hint) In Settings>Other Settings you have the possibility to control volume from the app if you have a suitable amp. While in settings, also enable Stay Connected & Tap For Options.
Purchased an NDX last year very very pleased with it I'm using it with a 20 year old plus Olive set up NAS is a Synology it sounds wonderful hope you get the same enjoyment as I do.
Hi
I have NAC82 2x HiCap 2xNAP135.............
Do I take it the volume is only adjustable from more modern pre-amp i.e. 282 etc ?
Al
Correct I'm using mine with a 82,supercap and 250 just in the process of upgrading, new kit on order this was one o the point's discussed with my dealer.
Hi Mike
Thanks for reply - profile updated !
Al
......... hmmm sad to spoil the looks of an Olive set up - best ever Naim good looks IMO.
But you've gone an dun it with the NDX & thinking 282 as the obvious, then the NDX can become a volume control & a switch point for the connections into the pre-amp - for example I use my app for the normal NDX functions like UPnP (NAS), iRadio, USB & the streaming services, plus it switches & controls volume for FM tuner & TV audio.
Got an identical setup to AL9315 (NDX/QNAP NAS with Minimserve/ CD rips done by DBPoweramp connected together with switch). Also using Olive kit (52 &135s) which give a great sound with the richer NDX (no PS for me at the moment). I've been really happy with the setup.
Couple things to pass on if you haven't already - I've ripped CDs to FLAC and then modified Minimserve to transcode to WAV on the fly. It does improve the sound but God knows why and also move your Ethernet cables & switch away from the power leads. Otherwise plug it in and enjoy.
I found initially I switched between individual songs a lot "just to hear" what X sounded like but over the past few months, I'm playing whole albums again and buying tons of used CDs which is the whole point in the end I guess.
Well done AL9315!
It will all become self-evident when your NDX is connected to the network. Not much more at the moment.
When you click on the PC button on your NDX remote you will choose the UPnP input. A list of servers will appear - most likely you will see two 'servers'
1. MusicNAS (or whaterver name you gave your QNAP) - you cannot use that one
2. Minimserver
You will need to select 'Minimserver'. This one will stream the music to your NDX.
If anything - you know we are here to help.

Mike kind of answered this. The app is obviously aimed at the mass audience so it talks about "muso" when what it really means is "streamer". So once your NDX is connected via the newly installed Ethernet cable to the router and the NDX is switched on, you can tell the app to search for musos and it will show you a graphic of your NDX. You touch that and you are away.
Once you get used to it, the app is fine and the method of choice for controlling Naim streamers, especially if you have it running on an iPad.
enjoy! Best
David
Nice to see someone as excited as I know I'd be.
Things in the meantime - if you're using Minimserver, there are a couple of things to do if you haven't done them already.
Install minimwatch on your PC. This allows you to control the finer aspects of Minimserver.
Install minimstreamer. This adds a bit of functionality to Minimserver, including on-the-fly transcoding. You can then set it up to transcode other formats to .wav for a boost to sound quality.
Think about metadata. There are different ways of thinking about tagging things like classical music and compilations. For example with classical I've settled on using the composer's name for 'album artist', then the orchestra and conductor as the individual track artist tag. Seems to make things appear in a way I find intelligible. But everyone will have different preferences. It'll be clearer once you can try it out for yourself in the Naim app, but having an idea of how you'd like it to be will make it easier to achieve.
HTH.
You're right to be excited about the NDX. I got mine earlier this month, and it's running in nicely. In fact, I unplugged the XPS from my CDS3 to power it and am loving the extra resolution, separation and bass. The poor old CDS3 sits there unpowered and unloved at the moment. Am wondering how great it would sound with a 555PS? Next upgrade, perhaps?
The one negative note is that the remote handset has been playing up, and has finally given up the ghost this week. Replacement needed.
Enjoy it when it comes!

Had a demo of a new system a couple of weeks ago part of the demo included adding a XPSdr to the NDX the difference was fairly substantial I ended up purchasing one to go with the new system as ordered counting the days till delivery.
A HUGE thank you to all of you - greatly appreciate the assistance from this forum, members are all wonderful !
Roll on Friday - I will report back once settled in ! ( or sooner if I have any problems ) )
