Unitilite update to version 4.4 .. having some trouble
Posted by: dap1 on 27 April 2016
Downloaded version 4.4 onto my mac and had to load usb drivers but just cant do it .. not happening . I have 2 options send the unit back to Naim and ask nicely to update it . Or do you think the shop where I bought it from would do it ? .. I suppose i could just go and buy the lovely new version with Bluetooth and Tidal already installed and I dont think the wife would notice .. Now thats an idea .....
Your dealer should certainly do it for you. It will take them ten minutes max so they could let you listen to something while they did it.
I'm not a Mac user so can't help you with doing it yourself. It is straightforward with Windows but does seem to be more of a struggle with a Mac. If you search this forum you will find lots of threads about it and one of those might give you the hints you need to sort it yourself.

To avoid any trouble I always had my UQ2 updated at my Naim dealer back in HK. Your dealer should be able to complete the update in no time.
Due to my relocation from HK I had to upgrade it to 4.4 by myself. Nearest Naim dealer is around 300 miles away here.. Thankfully my attempt was successful. I am a Mac user too. The issue might be down to the USB cable that you use.
I know the urge. 3 years ago I went in the dealer to get my UQ2 but departed with UQ2+Nap100
Same problem here when trying to update mine using a Mac. Took it to a dealer, who managed it on the second try.
The multiroom playback and Tidal streaming are well worth it.

The first couple of streamer updates I did were a bit fraught, but on both occasions, I realised that I hadn't quite followed the instructions correctly. Read them, and follow them exactly to the letter, and it seems to me to work quite easily. I always use a Mac, and now that I've done quite a few, it seems extremely straightforward and reliable; I can't see how it could be any simpler on a PC.
I haven't found the windows based update that picky.
But there have been several threads about updating from a mac. As I recall the last mac OS update broke the updates and getting it working again was non-trivial. No doubt searching in the forum would find these discussions.
But going to your dealer may well be your best bet.

I think i will ask the dealer thx for your replies .... Just seems so antiquated doing it this way ... walking about with either a mac desktop under my arm or best part of £2k,s worth of hifi as they are in separate rooms ....... I could just by a new apple laptop but thats a bit extravagant .... or is it

I bought a 10m long Ethernet cable for £1.99 inc delivery so that I could wire everything as per the instructions - it seemed easier than moving boxes around! But if you can't be bothered, just arrange a time with your dealer and they should be able to do it while you wait.
If you give us some more details regarding where you're getting stuck, you might get all the help you need right here. I've updated Naim "stuff" with usb and my Macbook many times. And I'm not special in that regard
Rather than buy a new Mac to do it, you could buy a cheap Windows pc. There do seem to be less issues using a pc to update streamer firmware.
But I agree with Bart. Tell us more about where it goes wrong and someone may be able to solve it for you.

There is one spot in the process of installing the required driver on OS X that Naim's instructions seem wrong / misleading, and one can look for and not find the right port in a drop-down list. Again, if the OP posts where he's getting stuck, help likely is available.
it just doesn't show in my driver list when i look in the ' about my mac ' usb drop down and i definitely installed it ,,,, think i'm just gonna take it to my dealer and ask them if they can do it .. its not too far to go .
Thank you for all your input chaps
I suggest you persevere, otherwise you'll be stuck when the next updated firmware is released. If you explain exactly what you are doing, someone with the updater on a Mac will be able to help. You could also contact Phil Harris at Naim for guidance.

It doesn't show up in the Windows driver list either. What you have to do with Windows is connect the Naim unit with the mini-USB to USB lead and turn the Naim on. Once it has finished booting up you can start the installer. You get to the point where there is a drop down list to select the port and with Windows you have to wait for some seconds (10 or more) while the PC starts the driver. Then you can find it on the list. I expect Mac is similar.

Correct; on the mac, the right driver does not show up immediately on the drop-down list. Connect it up . . . and it appears. I will confirm tonite my time, as I need to install a beta version on my Qute and NDS (Im far behind on that).
I'm not sure that's right, Bart. I needed to download the driver (silabs I think it was) before the 'Com 3' port would appear. The Naim instructions have a link to the right place. Once the driver is installed, it doesn't need to be done again.
But I think that the OP was looking for it in the mac list of ports, whereas what I'm talking about and I think Bart is too, that the port shows up in the list of available ports in the drop down list in the installer.
in Windows you load the driver once but it is only activated when needed, so that's why you have to connect the Naim unit before trying to select the port. I imagine the Mac is the same?

Yes, you connect the Naim, then the drop down appears. But if the driver is not already loaded, the appropriate port won't appear in the drop down list. As I said above, we need to to know exactly what the OP is doing.
We are saying the same thing! In his most recent posting the OP says he is looking in the "about my Mac" list of ports whereas he should be ignoring that and waiting for the drop down in the installer.

Right, and Right, David and HH. I think we're all saying the same thing . . . which may or may not be relevant to the OP's problem.
Updated my NDS today, so here is the story with the OS X updater. If you start the updater and haven't connected it to the streamer, the port will not show up in the drop-down list. If you then connect the mac to the streamer . . it still won't show up in the drop-down list. You need to click the "back" button and go all the way back to the FIRST screen (the one before the one with the drop-down list of ports). Then click "next" and at that point the drop-down list will contain the right port to select.
I suspect the OP has gone off to see his dealer....

Too bad as once one learns how to do it, it's quite simple. And consistently fool-proof for me, even with a wifi network connection.
Nope just havent had time but have decided to do it myself as going forward I'll have to do more I guess .. I will let you all know if I have success ... I am no Bill Gates so wish me luck .. but thank you all for your help ... Nice being part of the NAIM family ...
