5si vs Uniti 2 vs SuperUniti

Hi everybody,

I currently have a Rega P3-24/Graham Slee Gram Amp plugged into my old system comprising Arcam CD62, Marantz PCM 7200 and Monitor Audio B4s. I am a music professional with lovely Dynaudios in my studio but I don’t need over-analytical in my small to medium sized living room, just enjoyment of my mostly 70s vinyl and ever expanding CD collection.

I auditioned an original Uniti with Neat Motive 2s ages ago at Grahams Hi-Fi and was very impressed but have since procrastinated about taking the plunge and have also enjoyed reading about the CD5si/Nait 5si combo which appeared subsequently. Assuming I keep the Rega, and plan to get the Neats, would the Uniti 2 be a definite step up from the 5si pair? And there’s also the SuperUniti, but would that be over the top in a smallish room? (Though I would prefer a volume knob…) I know I get added radio/streaming functionality from the Uniti’s but I could add that later - I just want to start with the best basic sound.

I know this is all subjective but I’d be very interested to hear of any experience of comparing 5si/Uniti2/SuperUniti. Thanks!

I have owned similar gear to what you are thinking of getting. Namely a cd5 , nait 5 then uniti 1 then super uniti.

I was absolutely delighted with the Uniti. It drove some Rega speakers and sounded better than the earlier cd5/nait 5 combination. I am not sure how the uniti 2 would compare with the  more recent 5si separates but I am sure it would not be shamed. Also the streaming and radio is a bonus.

The Superuniti would sound better again, but you would need either a CD player or some sort of server. It would have the best basic sound and It would be fine in a small room.

As such I think the Uniti 2 may be the most cost effective option.

Have you considered Rega Apollo/Brio - these are available in both full or half Width and have volume knop - cheaper alternative, not analytical but musically value for the outlay, I'd rather like CD & amp beeing separated in case something happen 10 years ahead

That combo will match your P3 and you could just sell the lot remaining

Not sure about the MA speakers but an old pair Ela would do the trick for pocket money

I'd say SU is way too expensive but you may have a point bringing it in

Hi Pompitous

Dont worry too much about room size, my room size is really small and I have pmc 23's and a SU. Keep your options open.

Firstly, I reckon sonically the 5si and uniti 2 are quite similar in sound performance. The uniti 2 has DNA from the nait 5si so their performance will be similar. The thing I love about the uniti2 is the amount of functionality you have. It's has the 5pin power din output so that you can use the stage line with your Rega rp3 to maximise the performance of it.

With the uniti 2 you can also edge your way towards a separates system by adding a power amplifier, since it has a pre out. That will maximise the performance of the uniti 2 and provide the first stepping stone towards making the leap to a pre amp.

I am confident to say that SU will sound better than a 5si, and it certainly sounds better than a uniti2. The sound stage just opens up and the level of detail jumps up considerably. The sacrifice: functionality, but ofcourse you could use a third party phono stage through the RCA inputs, and then you are ready for your turn table. If it is sound quality you are looking for, the SU is certainly the unit for you.

I have no regrets sacrificing cd for a SU using tidal or music on my hard drive. It just sounded that much better!

Hope this helps!

Regards

Ryan

Thanks all, very helpful, and yes I've still got half an eye on Rega gear though I promised myself a Naim system back then and it's hard to let go of that aspiration.

I assume if I could afford the SU my Arcam CD digital out would get me by for the moment...

I think that would be a good idea yes. Not too sure how the DAC on your arcam CD matches up to the DAC on the SU. I would of thought it would be better on the SU, so you can indeed use the digital inputs to maximise performance.

I have heard good things about the rega gear. I just find that the naim range is brilliant, because every step up you take, the difference is so clear.

Is it possible add an power supplies HIcap or similar into SU?

No.

Perhaps because there would be no need.

right now I'm listening to the album A Distortion Of Love - Patricia Barber; is terrific how is depth the sound stage and how is deep and clear the bass. My SU surprise me day by day.

I would reccomend you this album, amazing sound

As good as the superuniti is, I have tested it by adding 250 DR.

The 250 DR is a huge upgrade on the superuniti

Of the options listed, I'd say the SU would offer the best sound.

I have no doubt but I chose the SU to not add more boxes. Reading in the forum who have added a nap 250 then they replaced the SU with Nac 272.

It is an inevitable step. I'm happy with my minimalism, at the moment

I totally agree!
