Muso boxy/boomy sound cure

Posted by: Kermit on 30 April 2016

Having previously owned a Muso, which I sold due to the sound being overly weighty, with a congested presentation (only my view) I have been looking at a replacement. Well today I have bought a pair of B&O (wash my mouth out) A1 Bluetooth speakers, which can be paired together to form a very small (with no wires) stereo pair. They don't necessarily look as nice as a Muso, and they haven't got that lovely volume dial, but well I be rogered (sorry Roger) they sound fantastically good. Good stereo separation, taught bass, and shimmering treble, all for £398!! Pleased as punch, if anyone is in the market for solely Bluetooth speakers, these are well worth a look.

Sounds like the muso was too close to the wall, possibly with loudness on? I have found it benefits greatly from being at least 30cm from the rear wall and ideally more like 50cm.

Ive heard b&o at their outlet centre a few years ago. They were demonstrating their acoustimass system and I recall thinking it sounded great.

It was about 10cm from rear wall, but definitely no loudness on. Still sitting here listening to these little things, absolutely incredible considering price.

Hi, I liked the Muso package and the sound, but having the tweeking bug resident in my life, naturally wanted to see how to improve it.  Sound tightened significantly after placing it on some ringmat feet I had laying around.  Changing the power cord for a Nordost Purple flare also improved the sound.  These changes left me with a bigger sounding system, without losing the basic Naim sound.  My Muso is placed 5 cm from the rear wall.  Also it has provided music in a 5x5 metre room easily load enough for loads of people to dance to.  It does it for me - looks good as well.

Best wishes Amer

Kermit, do you need wifi for stereo listening with a pair of B&O A1?  I could use the wi-fi app for initial setup at home, but "in the field" wifi would not be available.

Hello, no wifi needed. Connect your source (phone/iPad/computer) via Bluetooth, and off you go.

Ruark MR1 are also very good. Both my kids have them in their bedrooms. They also have a line in to allow them to attach a turntable although mine run their TV's through them.

I've not tried the Muso.

Thanks, Kermit.  I will be spending a month this summer in isolated conditions, so the stereo pair of A1 sounds interesting.  I haven't heard the original Muso, but the Qb sounds mediocre to me (even after taking into account its modest size and price).  My benchmark is the original Tivoli 1 radio.

Have just purchased a Mu-so (slimming down from a 172/200), after some interesting network issues, I find the Mu-so just as enjoyable as the separates I had.

Mine sits on a hollow, but rigid cabinet, with a shelf about 5 inches above it. I have played with the settings and have loudness off and distance as more than 25cm from wall, when it is closer. I would have thought I would have boomy base, but it's not the case.

I played a track by Doctors of Madness yesterday, which for many years has sounded pretty thin on any  another system I have had, but this little speaker captured the raw excitement that the track/album can have. Sure it's not wide spread stereo, but it is incredibly pleasing.

My space is 4x5mtrs with nearly 3mtrs floor to ceiling, the Mu-so isn't lost.

Finally iradio sounds hugely better on this than my ex separates.

AHT, good luck, would be interested in your thoughts if you demo/buy a pair.

PG, I'm pleased that you like it, it is only my opinion and appreciate others will have differing thoughts.

I've found placing mine on  a small pyrex oven dish, firmly stuffed with old rags, worked wonders for Qb bass boom.

All the above entirely serious!

For what is worth, I find the Muso's sound cheap and compressed while my dealer sees it like a second coming. It's a marketing ploy, nothing more. It would sound very good..@ 1/3 the asked price.

I heard a Sonos play1 at one of my friends, it should be said placed in a corner, and that was not up to qb standard at all.

The better the music the better sound you get from the qb, but I think that the focus on base is the same for all of these kind of players. I agree with others here it has the Naim sound.
