Tidal

Now that Naim have a link with Tidal for music streaming a word of caution. I had a trial with Tidal early last year which I did not take up. However, in order to start the trial I had to provide credit card details. Since January this year a sum of £19.99 per month has been charged to my credit card purporting to be a Tidal subscription, I have contacted TIdal and they confirm I have no subscription with them. It appears that their internet security is not as watertight as it could be and that credit card details have been leaked. Even though the credit card in question had expired its still possible to make charges against it for subscriptions, so fraudsters are able to continue to use old information. The moral of the tale is make sure you religiusly check your credit card statements if you pass on the information.

So some internet fraudster was getting 19.99 per month from you via a charge that appears on your bill as coming from TIDAL?  I don't think so.  While Tidal was happy to say you don't have a subscription, I'm rather confident they, not some fraudster, was getting your money.

I'm pretty sure that the terms of the Tidal trial were that you had to affirmatively cancel the subscription, less it roll over to a 19.99 per month deal.  That's certainly how it worked here in the States. I cancelled mine as well, but not after paying 19.99 for several months in which I did not access the service.

Indeed you have to actively cancel Tidal, which with my several trials I did straight away and access was granted until the trial period finished.

Many other companies work like this.

I'm now on the second paying month of Tidal with Roon and it's "changing my mind about margarine "

Bart, you are right it was Tidal after all, they just emailed me to say it was an error and will refund the money, no offer of any freebies though!

I have just cancelled my  3 months trial which ends  tomorrow. Although newly released albums sound good on their HF subscription, the majority of the music I listen to was originally released on vinyl and the transfers to digital are simply appalling.

It also bugs me that everytime  I log on, I'm faced with one of their promoted "artists" like Beyond the See , Just See or whatever they are called. 20 quid for that? Don't think so!

Roon's integration with Tidal, really turns Tidal into something special and very useful as it relates your own collection to Tidal, so if you search any artist you see your own albums and then any others that are on Tidal. Then you can simply add them to your collection if you want.

Integration is the key to make Tidal work and not just have it as an add-on.

I never rated Tidal or understood how I could use it enough to justify *20 per month until I tried Roon.

* if you pay by PayPal you are charged in dollars, reducing it to about £14.

I seem to remember this idea being discussed a while ago. I don't think it worked for other UK users, and I think you might live in the Eurozone??

Indeed Ireland is very much in the eurozone, but obviously we don't use the dollar, so I presumed it was a Tidal/ PayPal thing rather than a Tidal/ PayPal/ eurozone conspiracy against the UK. Another reason to vote to leave !

Alternatively it may depend on what payment method you used for the trial, if it was sterling I'd imagine this would stick. If a different email address is used and PayPal selected and you're still asked for sterling we're back to the conspiracy theory.

Well that's interesting, because I signed up using PayPal for no other reason than I am too lazy to put my bank details in!  I was happy with it at £20 per month, even happier at £14 and it integrates very nicely with Audirvana too

I also provided my CC info to start a trial when I was in Europe last year as Tidal is not available in my country. To my surprise like one month ago I tried Tidal at home and was still operating. I reviewed my CC and charges were there. So, after the trial period ends, they start automatically charging a subscription fee. I'm not going to complain because I have no access to other services and Tidal is OK. Happy also with A+ integration. I pay CHF 25 about GBP 18.

Which is precisely what they tell you they do.

On 19th January there was a story on The Verge repeated on Neowin about the overcharging. "Tidal ex-customers hit with $20 bill; company offers 3 months access for free to say sorry." When does the Naim free subscription period lapse? Can I still sign up for Tidal now if I've never activated the free trial?

Found the answer to my own question via Google tidal site:naimaudio.com

Existing and new Naim Audio owners are eligible for a free 90 day trial of the HiFi tier service which is redeemable any time before the 30th September 2016 via the Naim Audio App.
