Replacing Grahams Hydra

Posted by: ashrafs on 04 May 2016

Hi

After 16 years of building my system I have finally have a all 500 system (NDS, 552 and 500) and its fantastic. I've always used the graham's hydra to power the system. To take advantage of the power lines  I am thinking about getting the music works mains block and connecting it with a Powerline. Has anyone made this change ?

Have done a forum search and other than make your own block or don't use a mains block, not much advice. I am not in a position to add extra sockets  (that may be a 2017 thing with an extension) and  cannot for various reasons. It seems a shame not to use the PL's.  thank you

Better might be the Musicline Powerigel Plus.  This is an upgrade over the original Powerigel and uses Naim Powerline cables.

Nowhere on the web have I seen anywhere that sells such a thing ! Is it custom made if you ask Musicline nicely enough ?

IIRC, Naim used to offer the standard (i.e. using standard Naim mains cabling) Powerigel via its online music label shop - I need to check whether they still do this.  Otherwise, if you're seriously interested then best contact Musicline and ask who is selling in the UK.

I have just ordered  a new 252 based system the dealer has wholeheartedly recommended a Musc works block connected with a Naim Powerline to the wall socket.

A seperate 6 way mains block to be used for he tv,dvd,EE hub etc.

Thanks PCD, will probably demo the music works block and see what its like. A few dealers recoomend it

No problem evidently the Naim Powerline works very well with it, the dealer showed me the Music works 6 way block last week it is very well designed and made plus it is wired in the correct manner to suit Naim equipment.

I don't care how good it sounds there is no way my wife would have something that looks like it comes from a cow milking shed in the livingi room

You could always keep it in the udder room then.

Ashrafs- as a slight aside, do you have dedicated mains, or does that need to wait for the extension. It makes a significant difference and provides a much better foundation on which to add Powerlines.

Funny sort of cow with six teets!

George, I will confess to a complete lack of knowledge on the make up of cow's teets, perhaps this is for a genetically modified cow?

Having experimented a bit recently I found good results with Furutec unfiltered music distributior eTP60. It's star wired.

Hungryhalibut - yes I do have a dedicated mains . I have a very old, weird house and adding extra sockets does mean going through concrete floors and walls. It was horrendous last time I had the house rewired.

I have the old Powerigel and it sounds much clearer and more dynamic than a Musicworks with Powerline. I strongly recommend trying the Plus version. I know that TomTom used to demo and sell them, so perhaps worth giving them a buzz.

They are also smaller than may seem the case from the photo and can sit by the curve in a Fraim base so they are practically out of sight...

I have similar experiences with Powerline vs stock cable. While Powerline brings more authority, bottom end and fullness to the sound, at the same time it loses clarity and in my system, makes the sound slightly unbalanced. I experimented with Powerline by connecting it to my mains block (Wireworld Matrix v2) and I've also tested it with Naim DAC. Similar changes both time.

The regular Powerigel uses stock Naim powercables while the plus version uses Powerlines. I would expect these two to compare same way than stock cable vs Powerline.

Maybe Powerline works better higher up in the Naim ladder but with my rather modest Naim DAC + SN2 & HCDR, I prefer stock cabling.

Just to be clear, I was commenting more on the performance of the Musicworks block with (and without) Powerline, versus the old Powerigel, which is I believe a superior design (sonically). I have no reason to doubt the new version with Powerline cables is superior, but have not auditioned it. The audition was on a 500 series system.

Yes I'm aware. Your experience just sounded so similar to mine, that's why I replied.
