'New albums' in Asset
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 04 May 2016
I cannot get Asset to show my new albums. When I go to playlists and then 'new albums' it shows an alphabetical list of the whole collection. Since copying all the albums to the QNAP and firing up Asset, I've loaded two new albums, and would expect them to be the first in the new albums list. But no.... I've rescanned, cleared the upnp cache and image cache to no avail. Does anyone know what I need to tweak? Thanks.
I've not tried. I liked that feature on the uServe however! Maybe ask Mr. Spoon over there on the forum. I'm interested in the answer.
HH,
Try
Playlists/New Albums/and turn off A-Z function.
Bingo! That was easy. The odd thing though, is that any albums where I've changed Metadata show as new albums too. Ah well, I shouldn't need to change much going forward.
Thanks very much.
Most welcome, I aim to please!!
Invoice is in the post
Just for Bart - when Dusty mentions turning off the A-Z, this is done in the app, not in the Asset setup. I was rummaging around in the sort tree before realising that it was unnecessary.
I had the same issue as I had to reinstall Asset and reset everything recently when moving to the new beta, all my albums were showing as new. I presume that as they were all discovered at the same time Asset presumes they are all new albums.
I have resolved it by reducing the dynamic playlist count to 50, down from 100. This is in the Asset configuration. This forced a rescan and my new albums showed up OK. I have since put the setting back to 100 and it is still OK.
This works for the beta, I haven't tried it with the production release. Albums which have had their metadata amended also appear as new.
Remember to do this when you don't want music as the database is wiped clean and a full scan is required which takes music offline until it is complete.
HH, there may be no point in you doing this as I recall you were going to abstain from buying new music, or did that intention only last a week!

The new albums list seems to be in order of file modification date. I've retagged some albums or converted them from uncompressed to flac level 5 file compression and they showed up in the new albums list. What version of Asset are you using? 4.7 on my QNAP has the new albums in the order I added them. I've also changed the Dynamic Playlist Item Count so that I can see more than the latest 100. I'm also running the latest software on the QNAP.

Slightly off-topic, but now that I'm using Asset, I'm finding it helpful to really "dig in" and optimize my metadata. It's a pleasure, as Asset takes ~30 seconds to rescan my entire library and pick up all changes! So for the next few weeks, I'll do some each night. So 'new albums' won't be all that useful to me for a while - until I finish this project.
More off-topic; my biggest issue is when to combine cd's. A box set of Bach cello suites might be 3 cd's each with 2 suites. Do I really want to see 3 cd's in the Naim App on my iPad? Maybe, if it makes it easier to play just the suite(s) I want to . But if I want to play all 6 anyway, maybe not. Do I need a 2 cd set of Quadrophenia to show up as 2 cd's? No. Or the White Album? No. So I think I'll change many of those so that they appear as one big cd.
I have combined very few CDs. All the renumbering and changing the discs to 1/1 rather than 1/2 and 2/2 seems like too much hard work.
90% of the time I use genre to find the music I want, and then into album or artist/album. With Minim and the UnitiServe before that, my vocal jazz was called Vocal - Jazz. But if Asset sees the genre like that it shows only Vocal on the genre screen. As I also had Vocal - Classical I ended up with two genres that just showed as Vocal. When you go into the genre it then said the right thing, but it was annoying on the genre screen. So I've retagged Vocal - Jazz to Jazz Vocal and likewise for classical. Now, Jazz Vocal sits next to Jazz, which makes more sense anyway. But retagging 250 albums was a pain. There is probably a quick way to make bulk changes in dbpoweramp, but I couldn't find it. In fact, I didn't think of it until I'd finished. It was quite therapeutic though - tidy metadata is happy metadata.

I thought I'd better buy something to see how the 'new albums' feature works. And it was Hyperion's album of the month with 20% off...
It is, oddly, therapeutic. It must satisfy the OCD part of my brain. Fortunately that's only a small part of my brain.

You are 100% correct!
