Balance reset on Supernait2

Posted by: Leon di San Marco on 06 May 2016

Hi! Have I only dreamt it or is there really a possibility, with some buttons combination on the Narcom4, to reset the l/r balance on the Supernait2? Thanks for your answers!

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking for here (why reset??),  have you tried turning the balance knob or pressing the balance buttons on the remote?

It's amazing, there are two buttons with bal written on them, and two arrows.

What you may be thinking of is that if you are unbalanced off to one side, if you press and hold the button on the Narcom4, it will change the balance and stop when it gets to centre. if you release the button, press it again and hold it will carry on in the same direction. I don't have a SN2 but I think the light on the balance control flashes when it gets to centre in this situation. Anyway it will say in the reference manual that you can download from Naim's website.

Hungryhalibut, if you'd like to help you're very welcome. Otherwise spare me from your pseudo-irony and don't bother me.

Yes, the situation is exactly the one guessed by David. I tried pressing and holding but it doesn't stop when getting to the centre. In the reference manual I haven't found any information about it.

Perhaps your question could have been expressed more clearly, then we wouldn't need to guess what you were asking.

Sorry I know some of the preamps do it, but perhaps the SN2 doesn't. You could talk to Naim Support (email or phone). But at the end of the day, does it matter? If it sounds right, it is right.  The room, the recording and dare I say it, your ears, may mean that the best setting for you isn't always exactly equal gain on each channel.  That is why Naim give us balance controls!

There is no 'centre ballance' on the SN2. I tried many tricks and button combinations...

The best thing I came up with is to light up the buttons (disp button) and to set the ballance by hand, using the green dot as a marker. This is more accurate than via the narcom.

But as David wrote: not every recording is evenly ballanced, and my room / hearing requires a slight skew to the right

Thank you guys!

To set centre balance accurately, with respect to the electronics only, use a sine wave generator into both L&R inputs (set to somewhere 100-400Hz), and use a DMM to measure the AC voltage at the output.

This wont take account of non-idealities in rooms loudspeakers or ears.

Huge,

Great response in that it places perspective on the theoretical and the reality and practical concerns thereabout with regard to true center balance.

I listen to my speakers and headphones at different balance levels, adjusting for each using the remote with my eyes closed. My room listening is consistently biased right to varying degrees. My HP listening balance is more centrally located yet varies left or right of 12 o'clock depending on the day or the recording I'm listening to. That said, I really don't focus on the balance once generally set for either situation. Too many potential variations in the electronics and recordings to get very concerned with it.
