Editing problem with Unitiserve
Posted by: stebro on 09 May 2016
I'm having trouble editing CD information on my Unitiserve. For example, one CD I burned has the wrong name listed under "artist". When I try to edit it on my PC, I get a pop up message saying "hard disc is currently busy--please try again later." I've tried many times with the same problem. I am not burning a disc or otherwise using the hard disc for other things when trying to edit. I turned the Unitiserve off and back on but that didn't make any difference. When I try to edit the artist information using my iPad or i Phone, I get a message saying "error-could not rename artist". The same thing happens when trying to edit the album name or other information. The funny thing is that, when I try to rename something with my iPad or iPhone, the new name appears in the library listing for a couple of minutes and then reverts back to the previous, incorrect one. Would appreciate any advice.
Do a rebuild Database from the Desktop Client or the N-Serve for Mac software.
Thanks for the prompt reply. I selected "rebuild database" in the Desktop Client on my PC. I got a message saying something like "rebuild will begin when system is restarted." I turned off my Unitiserve by touching the front logo, waited until it stopped flashing, and turned it back on using the switch on the back. For the last 30+ minutes the front logo has continued to flash and my system can't find the find the Unitiserve and connect to it. Is this normal for a database rebuild and, if so, how long should it take? It it's not normal, what now? Sorry for all the questions!
Update-The good news is that the logo has stopped flashing and my Unitiserve is back online. I assume the rebuild database worked. The bad news is that the editing problem described in my first post hasn't changed. Still getting the same error messages, both on my PC and on my iPhone and iPad. Would appreciate any other suggestions. Right now, for one disc, the artist is listed as "Dvorak" when it should be "Maurizio Pollini." I've tried to edit it more than a dozen times with no success.
I suggest that you delete the disc that is wrongly labelled and then re-rip it. That should fix the problem.

One thing - make sure that the location where you rip your CDs is accessible to external applications.
If ripping to a NAS make sure that the folder has all access rights set for 'everyone'.
Thanks for the advice. However, I deleted the disc and re-ripped it with the same problem. When I try to change the artist "Antonin Dvorak" to the correct one--"Maurizio Pollini"--I get a pop up saying "artist cannot be changed." Curiously, when I try to change the title of the disc to the correct one--"A Life at the Keyboard"--it will not accept this either. But it will accept "LIfe at the Keyboard" (without "A"). This only happens with certain CDs. Is anyone from Naim listening who can advise?

Send an email to Naim support directly; they are very helpful.
If a track from the ripped album is playing when you try to edit, the UnitiServe will return these messages. Have you checked this?
I am not playing or ripping anything when I try to edit the album.
And it's not transcoding the WAV which is the result of a rip, to a FLAC? Is the problem the same if you leave it 24 hours?

Good observation David. This also applies to parallel transcoding to MP3. The US won't allow editing while it's busy doing this.
I've waited 24 hours with the same result. I've turned the Unitiserve off for 24plus hours and back on again. Still no luck. Here's something else strange. I couldn't change the artist on one CD from Dvorak to Maurizio Pollini although Maurizio Pollini appears in the existing list of artists. I just tried adding "Pollini" to that list and it worked--it added the name and changed the artist on the album from Dvorak to Pollini. But it won't accept "Maurizio Pollini" from the artist list.
The UnitiServe is a funny thing, it may be playing and you don't even realise. Have a look in nServe and see if it is indeed playing. If you've set it to rip to FLAC, it rips to WAV and then converts to FLAC. While it's doing any of these things you cannot rename tracks. The best thing I discovered with my Serve is that I should sell it.
Halibut, sorry to hear that you're down on the Unitiserve. Despite the occasional oddities, I love it. The issues I've encountered, like this editing problem, are relatively minor (though frustrating). I am listing to music much more often because it's so accessible. Used to hate having to look for the right CD, loading it and listening, looking for another etc., then having to put them back. Prior to the Unitiserve I owned an Olive server. Talk about problems. Both the hardware and software were disasters and support was almost non-existent. Have you found another server that does what the Unitiserve does and is better?
There are other solutions that do (almost) what the Unitiserve does. The problem though is that none that I've tried so far present music with as much engagement as the US. There really is a fair bit of Naim DNA in the device. While I have no doubts that Naim will continue to support their servers, I just wish, along with many others here, that they would offer an indication on whether or not they are developing them.
I'm on my second UnitServe, the first was a lemon, the second is a peach. I'm running it into a DAC, as you appear to be doing (how is the Auralic Vega and what have you compared it with, if I may ask?).
Thanks,
Jan
I compared the Vega to DACs from Cary,Bel Canto, Arcam, McIntosh and a few others. I was not able to hear the Naim or Hugo DACs, unfortunately. After buying the Vega , I heard the Luxman. The Vega is very detailed, almost clinical. At first, I had a hard time getting used to it. I made some adjustments to my system (the biggest one was adjusting the toe in of my speakers to make them more forward facing). I like it now. Of all the DACs I heard, I liked the Luxman best, although the price was much higher. How do you like the Naim DAC?
Given it's a Naim forum , you will probably hear that the Naim's DACs are the best
I like the functionality and the sound of my nDAC - that's why I have one
