Multiple MUSIC folders on UPnP server?

Posted by: DavidJ on 02 July 2011

I have recently bought an NDX and ZoneRipper Max.  I've started ripping but would like to keep different types of music (especially Classical) in different folders and access them separately - can this be done?  If so how?

Upnp picks up its info from the metadata not folder structures. I.e. fill your boots. As long as all them tiers you create are in the share the asset upnp is databasing you will be fine.

I don't know ZoneRipperM you are using, but usually the genre is automatically is assigned. I don't know if some servers allow you to edit and arrange genre and style names as you wish. (This would be in the metadata level.) Maybe somebody else could answer this question, and I am also curious.

However, if you simply want to arrange your types of music in different folders, Asset UPnP server has a special Folder and Filename Browsing feature where you could look for your music exactly like in Windows Explorer.

In terms of how you find music twonky certainly offered a folder structure view, but I don't know about asset. How its presented will be in the prefs of asset.

David, with uPnP servers such ad Asset, you can distribute your ripped albums wherever you like for convenience on your NASs, computer, you name it. When the UPNP server scans your media in the locations you tell it  it will produce it's own database with it's own structure. Again with Asset this configurable or you can leave as default. Finally as said Asset and some other uPNP servers let you navigate the physical file directories as well.
Word of advice, if you move your media around once it has already been put in the database, best force a database rebuild to avoid duplicate entries etc.

Most UPnP servers use the tags to provide the user with a view of the music library by artist or album. In many ways the underlying folder structure doesn't matter so long as your metadata is correct. ITunes is very fussy about creating artist folders to contain albums which makes a lot of sense if you are always picking music from the directory tree or moving music between iPods. Vortexbox gives me a folder view which lists my music as it appears in the directory, tagged and organised into artist-album_name (trackno_trackname) by bliss. I have stopped worrying about the folder structure. Tog

Mac users stopped worrying about folder structures in around 2003

aysil, does it mean I can use NDX to browse the original folders and play the tracks or the whole folder by a button click?

AMA,

Sorry for the late response; I was out for two days. I see that you've got the answer from Hook in the other thread: Yes, this is possible if you chose the Folder & Filename Browsing feature of Asset server (this is server specific). You can browse the original folders and play the tracks by a (series of) button click(s), but with whole folders, it depends: On the front panel control of NDX, the play button is activated only when you reach a track - when you select a track, the whole album is played until the end starting from this track. I suspect this is the same in n-stream, as it has no playlist feature, either. If you use a cp with playlist feature (I use Kinsky on pc), you can also play whole folders with subfolders (multiple albums) with a button click with no intervention in between, because the whole folder can be added to the play queue.

When I read how you organize your folders in the other thread, I realized I started doing the same kind of folder tree. The only downside being the impossibility of intersections between folders.
