Naim 5x and 5xs
Posted by: trane on 17 May 2016
Hello Folks,
I have an old 5x from 2006, which needs a repair. Been thinking about the 5xs. Is there a difference soundwise between those two?
Thank you.
I assume you mean a CD5x vs CD5xs? Yes, while much is similar, there are a number of changes and improvements, not least of which is the addition of a digital out on the 5xs. However, on sound quality alone, I reckon you should be looking at a CDX2 or higher to really make a change worthwhile.
In short, in your position, I wouldn't bother with the 5xs. Either get your 5x repaired and maybe add a Flatcap or else trade up.
Thanks for your response, Richard. Yes, I meant the CD5x. Your suggestion is really helpful. I use mine with the FlatCap2x, and love the sound, but the player needs a laser replacement, and I've been thinking about getting the cd5xs if there is a very noticeable sound difference. Now I'm going to rethink the whole situation. Thanks again.
I'm not convinced a CDX2 is much better than a CD5x with Flatcap. Different yes, but better? For a real improvement it's a CDS3, but with the obligatory power supply it's a lot more money. Perhaps just get the laser changed.
In many ways i prefer my CD5/FC2 to a CDX2, and only when i play my CDS3, do i hear the limitation of the CD5.
Gary, to be fair, the CD5/FC2 is rather different to the CD5x and CD5xs, but I understand what it is you like about the earlier player. Personally, I too prefer the original CD5 to the later x and xs (and even the CDX), even though I appreciate that the later players are technically better and more resolving. But then, my favourite relatively affordable Naim CD player is still the CD3 - hugely flawed compared to the later players but magical with the right disc and music.
