Chord SSA IC : to lock or not?

Posted by: kevin J Carden on 18 May 2016

Finally! Loaner SSA has landed chez moi. exciting!

Just installing now and will start the listening later. quick Q for the SSA fans:

A long while since I used a DIN with locking rings and I recall that Naim recommended NOT locking the ring, but leaving it undone.

What best for this SSA do we reckon?

cheers,

Kevin

I don't lock mine.

Having used the SSA I realise how weighty and stiff the iC is. This means the DIN socket bears all the weight of the cable as it sticks out (rather hanging down). Please, no childish comments, thank you.

This means the DIN does need to perform some securing function so I engaged the locking rings fully and then turned them back quarter of a turn, bit like the recommendation for Naim stock DIN cables. Best not to have the SSA DINs too loose as you risk damaging the pins/pin sockets.

Thanks Tony. will start that way anyway.

I lock the DIN plugs on the XLR leads, and also the snaic,

but the DINs on the front-end cables i leave unlocked.

Which SSA cable do you have?, and what components is it in-between?

Yes this is a good point, tbh don't feel entirely happy with leaving them unlocked, and have tried them done up [albeit very lightly] and can't say i notice any change in SQ.

I think it may be a case of doing them up very lightly, and giving them the undo and doing up exercise a couple of times a month.

At least it's easy to experiment with both ways and use whichever way you prefer.

Thanks all. Debs, it's a din to din running from NDS to 52.

I don't lock all my SSA ( DIN-DIN, Snaic, XLR-DIN ). No problem until now.
