between the speakers and on the wall !!

Hi,

I will be without music now for about 5 to 6 months - my home  us under renovation and for the moment i am trying to make do with a pair of Audioengine A2's till i put back my main rig.

My system is a CD5XS + Naim Nait 5i-2 + Merlin TSM ( this is all wrapped up now temporarily )

This time i plan to shift the 46 inch TV between the speakers ( on the wall ) to a different location altogether and i wanted to know if :-

a. I could leave the wall between the speakers bare

b. hand up a thick rug or a painting ??

Having an LP rack or book shelf is unlikely  due to dust & accessibility reasons

Open to suggestions which would improve aesthetics, sound and not be too expensive as well.

One thing is certain - my rig will have some form of QRD and i will certainly keep warm this thread again when that happens.

I already found out an acoustics company here in Mumbai who sell ready-made QRD for AV applications and i will be having a chat with them.

I intend to start with :-

a. observing the sound with a bare wall behind and in between the main stereo speakers

b. then move to a painting / rug. I already have a large sized painting in my hall which i can use

c. observe with QRD ( in my home ).

This option will be best i anticipate.

I have heard music at my friends house with and without a QRD.

With QRD - every thing had definition and the speakers sounded - relaxed ( not laid back at all ) while presenting the music.

I am not thinking about any hardware changes till i try the above 3 steps. I have a feeling my existing setup will be sounding even better.

This is a journey and i am more then happy to share mine so the reader may benefit in some minor way atleast.

best regards

The question to ask is what will a QRD between the speakers that works from 500Hz up actually be diffusing? Probably nothing very much directly from the speakers as they themselves will be tending to radiate only forwards at these frequencies. So the QRD will probably mostly be diffusing reflections from other room surfaces, most pprobably the wall behind you. It would arguably therefore be a lot more sensible to put the QRD behind you, or possibly on side walls. This is indeed where they are most commonly used. For the wall that the speakers are on, low frequency absorbers are the usual recommendation. Paradoxically, these can often increase bass because they stop bass getting reflected from the walls that otherwise cancels the direct output from the speakers. But as I said earlier, a bookshelf or the like with some messily arranged books will give you some quite reasonable diffusion free!

Be sure that if any walls get opened up that before re-boarding you put in what's called 'rock wall" or soundproofing insulation. Made a big difference in our just remodeled living room. Both in deadening the room as well as keeping sound from the rest of the house.

thanks..for this perspective.

This afternoon i was chatting with a friend of mine who was mentioning the same thing ( almost ) and

one of the points mull over is a diffuser on the ceiling as well.

No point force fitting something that will be of negligible use or actually make things worse.
