Speaker cable for Unitilite/B & W 685s2 - Linn K20?
Posted by: Martycol on 20 May 2016
Hi,
I have the above kit apart from cables - need 7 metre runs so cannot afford NACA5. I am thinking of Linn K20 - one sixth the price - or can anyone please suggest anything better up to £10/mtr that is suited to Naim amps - I don't want to compromise that wonderful Naim sound! Thanks a lot.
Morning Martycol
I used to use Van Damme hifi cable, 4mm. Sounded great for the money. Compared it with a fellow forum members Chord Rumour2 cable and couldn't tell them apart. It's the same 'shotgun' style cable as the Nac too. It's not at the Naim cable level, but you can't expect that for the money. A great value, capable cable for the money. Have a quick google for the hifi pig review
Given your budget limits, K20 is an excellent choice, it has very similar specs to NAC5 & given you need 7m per side, your UnitiLite will be a happy little amp.
I agree Mike. The k20 is an excellent choice. The van damme has a higher capacitance so will roll off the high frequencies slightly. Didn't realize the k20 was such a good price.
Hi Kinkfan, capacitance roll-off at the very low C levels of VD, K20 & NACA5 will never be an issue, its only when you get into the very high C of the woven (Kimber & Goertz) types with C numbers over 1500pF/m that it can start to become a problem, & with Naim amps that is usually because of amp output stage stability. High inductance does give a gentle speaker roll-of but is well above the audible range in normal system set ups. With an installation of 10uH & with 4 ohm speakers its -1dB @ 32kHz (64kHz on 8 ohm) & with NACA5 @ 1uH/m it will not be a problem unless you have >4 ohms speakers & >10m per side.
Ahhh thanks for the info
Martycol, I agree with the vast majority, Linn's K 20 is an excellent choice.
Virtually the same Cable as Naim's Nac A4!

A bit of history:
NACA4 was a Naim design and was made for Naim by BICC. Unfortunately due to an alleged change of staff and premises, BICC thought it was their design and started to supply a similar cable to other manufacturers, including Linn.
When it was pointed out to BICC that they were effectively supplying illegal copies of NACA4 to other manufacturers, the case was settled out of court in Naim's favour. According to Naim's Julian Vereker, "We then spent the money on designing a new and better cable with another supplier under a secrecy agreement, and this is the NACA5"
I use it with my 282/250.2, sounds good to me, but what do I know!

I agree with kinkfan or is it Finkfan![]()
Well spotted Wenger! ![]()
He seems to answer to both Kink & Fink, no probs, I answer to all sorts of names, "Oiy You" or "What'll Ya Have" both work for me.
We use a pair of speaker cables by Crimson Electronics between our UQ2b and the Blumenstein Thrashers. These are great and the price is right. Crimson RM Music Links. They are not as stiff as NACA5. They sound more open than NACA5 and work well with the system.

Thanks a lot guys - K20 it is!
I used Linn k20 for a year or so with a UQ 2 amongst others and it was an excellent cable for the money
