Credos - still using them?

Posted by: Salmon Dave on 20 May 2016

I thought I'd take the forum away from thorny topics like whether to add a third 555PS to the existing 7-box system, and ask if anyone here is still using Credos and if so, how do you think they compare with some current speakers?

I had a pair for a brief while in the late 90s and thought they had some special qualities which I hadn't found elsewhere; and never warmed to allaes for some reason.

Interesting that you never warmed to the Allaes - the Allae was a direct development from the Credo (indeed, their internal development name was "Super-Credo").  While both similar in overall character, the Allae improved on the Credo in just about every performance area.  I can imagine any Credo lover to be even more delighted with Allaes, and any Allae owner to be reasonably comfortable and familiar if having to move down to Credos. I can only imagine that you heard each in very different places, systems and circumstances, the Credo's far more favourable than those for the Allaes.  As to the Credos themselves, very nice, fun and enjoyable speakers; Allaes all that and much more so...

p.s. Of course, Credos represent something of a comparative s/h bargain these days selling for about half the price of a good pair of Allaes.  Having said that, even Allaes represent excellent s/h value today.

I upgraded from Credos to Allaes many years ago but couldn't part with the Credos given their s/h value! They were just too good to let go at such a cheap price. They get very little use these days (connected to TV system), I do prefer the Allaes but the Credos are very good for the price

I'm still using Credos with NAC-N 172XS/NAP 140/Flatcap,  an LP12 with a 42.5 and very occasionally a CD5. I also run TV sound in via a Yamaha RX-V771, which supports rear, centre and a REL STIII. The streamer connects to an old Netgear ReadyNAS Duo which will be upgraded next - probably for a Synology 216 play.

Can't really justify upgrading anything else whilst I'm happy with the overall sound.

Salmon Dave,

As I shared (at length) in another thread yesterday ("Arrivas vs. Allaes") I had been running Intros for a very long time in my system - 15 years - and always liked them but as I upgraded some of my other components last year the Intros were finally starting to sound a bit out of their league. I bought a pair of Allaes in October and could not be happier. They are wonderful speakers in my room. Clean, crisp, fast, relatively uncolored and enjoyable across all the different types of music I play. I like what Richard said above about them being developed and thought of as a "Super-Credo." And as another plus, I think they look quite good as well - certainly better than my all black Intros did. I know this thread began as a question about still using Credos I just wanted to put in a plug for the Allaes.

I have Credos with 282/ Supercar DR/ 250. The music sounds better than ever, but I haven't compared with other speakers for a long time, or with this set-up.

I have a friend who enjoys his Credos.  I was able to enjoy them for several hours one day.  Certainly there are better speakers available, but this did not come to mind when we were exploring our favorite music...

I have a nice pair, one owner with removable crossovers arriving on Friday to slot into my small office system. I hope they work out, most Naim speakers have in the same room previously.

I've never heard Credos, but I've always thought they look great, and they are an amazing bargain at about £300. That's the thing about the older Naim speakers - they just let you listen to your music without getting in the way. Impressive by being unimpressive.

Never heard them either HH, but i considered the pair on the Pink place were worth a punt at under £300 delivered to go on a Qute or Nait with my CD5/FC. They look good and go against a wall and don't require ugly stands....all good in my book.

I thought it might be those. There's a lovely pair of Allaes too, but having curved tops they are less useful for putting your cup of tea on.

Credos on loan from my dealer were the speaker that moved me away from some monstrous VR-4s and landed me with SBLs. That something as comparatively small could reveal so much more music to me was a revelation at the time.

Credo's arrived today and duly installed on the Qute. I'd say i'm impressed.
