Powelined hicap-DR vs Supercap
Posted by: Fred11 on 21 May 2016
Hi!
Wonder if anybody has any experience comparing Supercap (olive or black) hicap-DR. I have a Dualrailed nap 12-160 powered by a hicap-DR with powerline. Would a supercap be able to improve on a 12. Asking because rumors says Naim themselves are using a 12-supercap in their service department. Guess this is question on both the best of old and newest of components....

Hi Fred - This changing a HCDR to Supercap 2 on a 282 this week might guide:
1. Low frequencies - much lower with real heft
2. Space round instruments - more evident
3. Timbres - more differentiated and accurate
4. Attack - greater stop/start speed
5. Soundstage - Wider, higher, deeper
6. Blacks - Blacker (of course!)
7. Instrument placement - More precise
8. Musically - More satisfying
All for now,
G

Dear Graem.
That sounds real interesting. I wonder though how it would be through the Nac 12, since it will only use half of the Supercap. Did you have two hicaps on it before you switched?

Hi Fred - No, just one.

Graeme I really did not want to read this, but thanks, much appreciated.
Damn.
No matter how much I try to avoid this though, somehow in the end I know I'm going to have to get the Supercap for my 282.

The supercap takes the 282 to another level. Graeme has basically spelled out the improvements. The soundstage and imaging improvements are immediately evident and then one realizes the other subtler benefits.
I didn't have a DR version of the hicap when I upgraded to the supercap but the difference was so big, there's something to skipping the hicap(s) altogether.

Supercap on a 282? Lovely...
Listening to 'Anthem of the Sun - Caution (Don't Stop on Tracks') and the sub-bass, not so evident before, is sooooo looooowwww!

Based on personal experience I totally agree.
And for an alternate view - my SuperCapDR on my 282 was a bit too hifi for me... on extended listens I preferred my HiCapDR. Kept my SuperCapDR for when I later got the 252.. beautiful...

Not sure that's an 'alternate' view. I'm talking about a SCAP2 Simon, not a DR.

SC2 on a 282 was quite simply one of those 'moments' for me. As i have said before, i'd not bother with a 282 without one.

Graeme, ok I see, how would you describe the differences between a SuperCap2 and SuperCapDR on a 282?.. I have only seriously listened to and currently own the DR version.. Perhaps it's the DR version that doesn't quite gel with the 282 to my ears?? This is plausible as I preferred the 555PS original to the DR version on my NDAC.
