72/HiCap/140 "doin' the business"

Posted by: Monster on 22 May 2016

Last night I spent a few hours listening to my LP12/Archidee/72/HiCap/140/Spendor S8e setup. The amps have really come on song after a short period of warming up. I listened to Clapton, Dire Straits, Cat Stevens, Miles Davis, Son House and Lynyrd Skynyrd. No matter what I played, I just sat there with a silly grin on my face and marvelled at just how well these little shoeboxes connected me to the music. It was as if I stopped listening with my ears and was listening with my heart. I stopped analyzing the sound altogether, and was simply drawn into the music, which was extremely coherent, balanced, and rhythmic.

Up to this point, I listened to this setup in short sessions just to get a feel for what was there. The sound on these occasions was OK, but there seemed to be some things "missing". The bass and drums weren't quite filled out, and there seemed to be a little glare on the vocals. Well, last night that all disappeared, and what replaced it was truly hard to believe. The amps have only been powered up for 3 days, but the replay has already improved beyond any expectations I had.

I have a mint set of es14's sitting around waiting for action, but I need to have my cables configured with "F" connections on the one end before I can try them. Should be interesting.

My main setup is a CDS2/52/250/Fraim/Arros/RelS3. This combo sounds wonderful, as it should. I couldn't be bothered to compare the 2 combos, which are in 2 very different rooms. Instead, I am just happy to be such a lucky fellow.

Thanks Naim...

Good stuff Monster!

I have an inventory of early boxes that I keep for exactly this same reason- it's fun to "go back" and listen to the sound that got me hooked on Naim so many years ago. You've nailed it-  the connection to the music . Using an LP12 doesn't hurt either! Have fun..

Great hearing about you classic setups! I have a 12-160. Sounds magic. Would really like to hear the classic 72-hicap-140 set my self!
