Restore music from NAS to HDX
Posted by: BigO on 23 May 2016
Can someone remind me how to restore or copy files from my NAS to HDX? I know it's done in the DTC and that there is a move album monitor but can't remember how to move individual albums to the HDX.
Which version of the HDX / software do you have?
"Restore" to me implies restoring .wav rips from the backup created by the HDX. Or do you just want to copy music over to it?
The HDX has been fully updated by Naim so presume the latest. I did a full restore of the files on the NAS a few weeks back after h/d failure. All I want to do now is to copy a file that wouldn't rip to the HDX that I have now ripped to my pc and copied to my NAS.
So in answer to your question I suppose it is both really - I am in effect restoring the WAV on the NAS to the HDX much the same as copying from the NAS. It is only one cd that can be reinserted onto the NAS if moved over.
Just put in the the HDX downloads folder using Windows explorer.
Done that - but does it need to go in the MQ folder on the HDX rather than the downloads?
Not important - as long as it is in 'Downloads'. MQ etc is just used by HDX / UnitiServe when it rips the music. LQ is for the MP3 copies it can make at the same time.
Do not put anything yourself into 'Rip' folder - this space is reserved for HDX rips. Even if you've ripped the older music yourself using HDX, it's best if you put it in 'Downloads' now.

The MQ folder is only for CD rips done on the HDX. Putting it in the downloads folder is correct, and you should be able to play it just the same. The only difference is that you can't edit it on the DTC or N-Serve. So if you need to edit the metadata or change the artwork, do that before you transfer it to the HDX.

The HDX + Naim App integrate all of the music the HDX 'sees' into a single interface; you won't know the difference if the files are in MQ or in Downloads. But given that this is a cd you ripped outside of the HDX, the ONLY place for it is in the Downloads folder; that's how the HDX is designed.
OK thanks for replies. I have copied this CD file from my pc to my NAS. Can this be then moved over to the HDX as a main, as if one was restoring the music data from the backup to the HDX, or will it still remain only in the downloads folder? Just for future reference really.

Just copy it directly INTO the Downloads folder on your HDX. That is what it's for. The Downloads folder on your HDX is a music share; it is meant to store music that you did not rip on the HDX but that you want to play. The brilliant HDX will store music is rips (in the MQ folder) and music you add yourself (in the Downloads folder).
Forget the "restore" stuff . . . use the Downloads folder for the purpose for which it is intended.
OK great thanks for this info. Cleared up an issue for me.
BTW it was only for a CD that refused to rip past the first 4 tracks so had to do it on my pc instead.
If you have a backup that you have made with the HDX and you need to restore it in the future then it goes back into the HDX's Music folder (you use the move music function of the HDX to do that - the Music share is read only from the network so you can't physically put music into there yourself).
Anything that you have ripped elsewhere or downloaded should - as has been said here - go into the downloads folder.
Cheers
