Naim SL2 Crossovers

In the absence of SL2 crossovers - will SBL crossovers work okay...?

Posted on: 24 May 2016 by BigH47

SL2  Xovers work well with SBLs so I would think vice versa would be OK too. I seem to recall the SL2  versions had a 1 db difference in the treble cross over point against the SBL offering.

Only slight fly in the ointment is the gap between the treble and bass sockets is longer in the SL2s, so a bit of "engineering" might be needed.

Howard,

iirc the 1 db difference is not the x-overs, but the original old vs new naim supplied SBL tweeters.

I find it hard to believe there is an absence of SL2 x-overs, i bet if you phone naim audio and ask them they can still supply.

My quest to find a pair of SL2 crossovers continues to be difficult. I have contacted Naim direct and they are unable to help me.

Yes, just phoned a naim dealer, and he said that naim have stopped making SL2 x-overs.

Seems a bit odd to me, we could do with confirmation to whether this stoppage is temporary or permanent (?)

A few years ago there was conflicting news suggesting SBL x-overs were no longer available, but suddenly they were again.

SBL x-overs are still available: £228.99 [ + postage]

What actually is your plan?...

Have you bought SL2 speakers without x-overs, or are you going passive from an active system?

Allow me to explain - purchased SL2's to replace my SBL's.

The SL2's are without crossovers and current budget will not allow me to go active just yet - hence the need for SL2 crossovers.

Re: SBL crossovers - I made contact with Naim directly this morning and was told that they have been discontinued and suggested I try EBay...!!

Yeh, that is a problem, not enough active ready speakers on the market.

 IBL/NBL/SBL/DBL/SL2/BRIKS

And Naim stopped production of the Ovators!

Sure would be nice if Focal would add to the list!

I had to clean my crossovers up, reverting from Aktiv LK 280's to Passive Tri Amp 250.2's/Briks.

When buying vintage Active Speakers, always nice to acquire crossovers along with the Speakers.

Good luck, I'm sure it's some arround, don't forget to inquire about recapping history!

They do crop up on eBay sometimes. Best way to check is often to have a look on Thursday evenings (eBay tip - savvy sellers know that they want their items to finish on Sunday evenings, as that's when the most people look at ebay, and 10 days is the longest free listing, hence start on Thursday evening).

It'd be a shame if Naim really have permanently ceased production though. Not only are OEM probably the preferred option for most people, the third party ones I've seen have been expensive and less convenient.

Edit: should have been clearer that I meant SBL crossovers. I can't remember seeing SL2 crossovers on ebay, though they may appear eventually.

Just to confirm - we no longer make SL2 crossovers. We have neither PCBs nor enclosures so cannot build any more ...

Of course whenever you ask a dealer whether they have any or can get any then they immediately phone us to see if we have any so we've had a few calls asking for these today.

Cheers

I'm not clear why Naim seems to be seen as errant in not continuing passive XO production. Where's the market? A proportion of owners might go active, so needing a SNAXO appropriately set up, but I doubt many people go the other way. The fact of people going active could create a small secondhand market, so the suggestion of the famous auction site seem quite reasonable.

How about SBL crossovers? I'm thinking that if it's PCBs and enclosures that are the problem, then if someone is really struggling, SBL crossovers with special order longer A5 cables might work?

Hi,

We can't do "custom" versions of SBL crossovers with longer cables ... they're made to a specific design. If you wanted to change the output cables on a pair yourself then that's something that is up to you but we can't build them with longer cables...

Can Naim service SL2 crossovers then as this wouldn't require PCB or enclosures?

If Naim are no longer making the cross-overs (for various loudspeakers), I wonder, would they be prepared to share their circuit diagram so that people with the correct electronic qualifications could make them?
