Any Magico Users Out There?

Posted by: Bodger on 24 May 2016

All,

I have had a quick search but found very little usage of Magico speakers, in particular the S3 or S5's. Can anyone report their own experiences with these, preferably with 500 series electronics? I am contemplating a change and these are on the short list.

Due to my location, popping down to my local dealer is not an option. I could, however, arrange a quick dem on my next trip back to the UK.

My others on hte very short list would be B&W 803 D3 and Art Alnico. The latter being the most difficult to demo.

Thanks - Dave

I heard them in  store and liked them but they cost a lot of money!  Holy Cats!   Quick and tight sound.  Well finished. Just need to save up.

Not heard the Magico speakers Dave but I know Jon Honeyball rates them highly. I have had a pair of ART Alnico references at home for a while to play with. Very transparent, highly musical with a huge soundstage. Outperforms anything I have heard from B & W by a long way,

I've heard the S3's with a SuperUniti in my dealer's showroom, and concluded that they needed more "umph" (power).  (Thus no sense in bringing them home to try with my SN2.)  I've never heard them with more power, however, so I dont know just how they sound when properly "fed."  I would think that a 500 "should" be enough for them.  Looks-wise I give them a 10/10.  I think they look very nice and would love to have a pair in my home.

I also heard the Q7's with Statement.  J'approve.

I have been using Magico Q3 for 3 years and matched them with 250 with 300 before and now 500DR. In terms of the sound signature Naim matches well with Q3, but this pair really need a lot of power to make them really sing. I thought I served them fine but I am not until I got 500DR at home.

hmmmn if you have room on your short list i would recommend Vivid Audio Giya series.  The 500 series brings out the best in them.  I loved my 300 but the 500 ooooohhhh they like that

With those you have to be comfortable with 2 alien-looking creatures in your listening room.

They are quite sweet, like thin tellytubbies.

i recently heard Magico (not sure which model, but price was 60k EUR :-)) with the "entry level" Vitus integrated Ri100  a few weeks ago... sound was magical (pun intended)...

Heard the s5 a couple of times and they were very good. There are a few good ex demo deals at Mo because v2 is coming out

Vitus and magico is a spellbinding combination. The ri-100 has 300wpc with bags of current to get the best out of pretty much any speaker. I've loved owning mine and it was such a big step up in performance from my 252/sc dr/ 300 driving my shahinians

S6 Magico is utterly superb. Best speaker I have ever heard, and by quite some margin, when driven by Naim Statements.

Last year I had a home demo of Magico S3 and Kudos Titan 88. I used CDS3/XPS2/552/500 (all not DR). Magico were much better for me. I could not find even one track which sounds better on Kudos .... I would say that Magico are much more coherent and precise than T88. I also prefer presentation of Magico. I was long time SL2 user and could not find loudspeakers which are significantly better. The first was Magico S3 ..... I know that S3 are completely different to SL2 but I needed something new ...
ps.
I would like to add that finally I found that prefer my old SL2 over T88

I want those S3's . . . but they are expensive and then I'd need much more amp . . . I think I'll just leave them in the "not yet" or perhaps "never" category.  I'm sure even a 300 wouldn't do them justice

Thanks all.

I will try a shoot out between S3 and S5 but they are eye-wateringly expensive.

I have contacted Art and may be able to get a pair shipped for a home dem which would be great.

Regards

Dave

PB,

I hear you but have you had a chance to listen to the new B&W D3's or is this based on the D2's?

The Arts have quite a few fans on here.

If I understand correctly, Magico is a sealed box design.   Isn't that right?   That would be a sure cure for ported speaker fatigue, which I feel coming on.  I was impressed with the smallest S model floor stander.

The Q model in the big room was breathtaking but when I pay $60,000 for something it better be burning gasoline.

Based on virtually every pair of B&W's I have heard Dave. It's a personal preference thing, I find all B&W's lack something whether they are two factual for my taste, I just find they don't communicate and they lack soul.

i look forward to reading your comments on the ART's, they communicate and connect in a way no other speaker can,

As we're allowed to dream -- S3's with an NDS-level digital preamp/streamer (372? 572?) and NAP-300 -- is what I'd audition.

S3's weigh 150lb each(!).

Only from written reports online I hear that the Hegel H160 can drive the Magico speakers quite sweetly and the amp only costs approx £2,300.00.  Some people would call it a 'mullet' system but if it  works in the sound quality department who cares....?

I am looking forward to beginning the ART project and will report back.

I bought my B&Ws for several reasons. The were the best of the bunch at the time. At the time I was still using Arcam gear and the speakers were probbly the best part of my system then. The nearby Naim dealer where I was beginning the Nain journey, was a fan of B&Ws with Naim. Having owned these for 10+ years, I do feel a tinge of brand loyalty and hence the interest in the new D3s.  Now I am certain that the speakers are the weakest link in my system and will relegate them to the "stage" downstairs.

You in Bucks by any chance.  A dealer I used to use pushes B&W with Naim.  Only tried the 803D with a 250.2 set up with top end LP12 front and was completely underwhelmed; immediately apparent why some people refer to them as "boom-tizz" speakers. Wallowing bass and brittle top end.  Last time I tried to have a conversation about amplifiers he seized the conversation and tried to flog me a pair of the new model.
