Any Magico Users Out There?

Posted by: Bodger on 24 May 2016

All,

I have had a quick search but found very little usage of Magico speakers, in particular the S3 or S5's. Can anyone report their own experiences with these, preferably with 500 series electronics? I am contemplating a change and these are on the short list.

Due to my location, popping down to my local dealer is not an option. I could, however, arrange a quick dem on my next trip back to the UK.

My others on hte very short list would be B&W 803 D3 and Art Alnico. The latter being the most difficult to demo.

Thanks - Dave

Vitus and magico is a spellbinding combination. The ri-100 has 300wpc with bags of current to get the best out of pretty much any speaker. I've loved owning mine and it was such a big step up in performance from my 252/sc dr/ 300 driving my shahinians

No wish to hi-jack the Magico thread - but - could you give me your impression of the Vitus vs Naim?  Which Naim amp combinatioj were you using? Some have said the Vitus comes close on the PRAT front, but doesn't quite match the Naim.

Not heard the Magico speakers Dave but I know Jon Honeyball rates them highly. I have had a pair of ART Alnico references at home for a while to play with. Very transparent, highly musical with a huge soundstage. Outperforms anything I have heard from B & W by a long way,

PB,

I hear you but have you had a chance to listen to the new B&W D3's or is this based on the D2's?

The Arts have quite a few fans on here.

Dave

Based on virtually every pair of B&W's I have heard Dave. It's a personal preference thing, I find all B&W's lack something whether they are two factual for my taste, I just find they don't communicate and they lack soul.

i look forward to reading your comments on the ART's, they communicate and connect in a way no other speaker can,

I am looking forward to beginning the ART project and will report back.

I bought my B&Ws for several reasons. The were the best of the bunch at the time. At the time I was still using Arcam gear and the speakers were probbly the best part of my system then. The nearby Naim dealer where I was beginning the Nain journey, was a fan of B&Ws with Naim. Having owned these for 10+ years, I do feel a tinge of brand loyalty and hence the interest in the new D3s.  Now I am certain that the speakers are the weakest link in my system and will relegate them to the "stage" downstairs.

Dave

I can understand that Dave and there would be nothing wrong with staying in the B & W fold, they are great speakers, and there is nothing wrong with the Naim B & W combination. However there are a number of other speakers out there that do things differently and you may find better speakers. I searched for many years and tried many different sets before finally deciding to keep the ART's.

Have fun with all the auditioning.

sorry to hijack the thread, but wanted to comment on Naim and B&W

When I first heard Naim it was with B&W 805s speakers, and I heard the Naim sound loud and clear.

I've now moved on after 5 years with B&W to Dynaudio, and have heard Naim paired with Sonus Faber, PMC, Proac, Magnat, and the Naim sound can be heard on each of these speakers.

I do understand that B&W have their distinctive sound, but it isn't a bad one, and I have had loads of fun with my 202/200/805s speakers.

After auditioning  more neutral speakers though, from Sonus Faber, Revel, Proac, and Dynaudio, I do find the tonal balance of B&W quite different, and especially after hearing the mighty Sonus Faber Stradivari, the decision was made to move on....

I recently auditioned the The Sonus Faber Olympica 2 which is one very special speaker !

Over the last weekend I listened to the Magico Q7 Mk 2 driven by Devialet 800 monoblocks, I have to say it was one of the best listening experiences I've had. That speaker - as expensive as it is - is I daresay worth every penny.

Polar bear,

what Arts did you settle on?

Hi Dave,

I went for ART Deco 20's Mark 2 and had them modified for my own personal taste.  The result, the transparency and openness of ART's with the speed and detail of Naims,

Hey PB,

It looks like they don't make the 20 any more. Do you know how your model compares with the current ART range or what is the current equivalent of the 20 Mark 2?

Hi Bodger

I would recommend a telephone call to Derek Dunlop (on his mobile) at ART.  The telephone number is on their website.

ART do many more speakers than they show on their website and I found it incredibly helpful to talk through my requirements with Derek before he suggested the one that he thought would hit the spot.  After a home demonstration, I then ordered a pair and enjoy them to this day.  You won't find the ART Alnico 8.3 Signature on their website, yet I have a pair at home.

Hope this helps, FT

Hi Dave,

The Alnico References are the replacements for the Deco 20's. I had the first pair of Alnico references at my home for demonstration but decided my Deco's were the better speakers.  I did have a thread on here and you could search the forum for my comments.

You may find ART have a pair of Deco 20's in their factory for sales, as FT says, a phone call to Derek will un-earth all sorts of options. There are models available that never made the market which could be very suitable for you

Kind regards

FT,

I have had a couple of chats with Derek now. Although I will be able to have a dealer demo of some Wilson, Magico and Focals shortly back in the UK, Derek will ship a pair of Alnico 8.3's over here for a home demo. They are described as fully loaded so will have the higher spec crossover components. I am looking forward to the next few weeks and will report back in July. You were right, no 8.3 on their website.

Hi Dave,

Great news.  Whichever speaker ends up being the preferred one after your auditions, at least you will have the satisfaction of having tried them for yourself.  Enjoy the process, it's a most enjoyable ride!

Best regards, FT
