More networking help please

Posted by: Paulq on 25 May 2016

Some of you may recall I previously had some issues with a UQ2 and my network which I never actually got to the bottom of.  That was returned and I bought a new Linn Majik DSM.  Same network, no different configurations, same hardware - not one single dropout or issue in over 2 months.

However, I do miss the Naim sound and have been considering whether I just had a 'bad one' in the UQ2.  I have been fortunate enough to borrow a SU for a few days and am literally running it side by side with the Linn to see which I actually like best. Both are on the same network, same hardware, using same speakers (not that that matters).  Guess what.  Twice this evening the SU has refused to play.  It will start seeing the NAS and playback music.  Until I try to go back and search for a different artist/track then I get 'Source Err' and only a reboot of everything will solve it.

Before I reboot everything I try the Linn. Perfect.

I REALLY want to keep the SU but for the life of me cannot fathom what's going on here.  All have discrete ip addresses so no conflicts.  The IGMP snooping thing is set to off so aside from that I am baffled.

Any ideas folks?

Paul - I was thinking - you should be able to see the USB port on your Mac, once you've completed the instalation of the UART bridge controller. Even without a USB cable.

Can you send me a screenshot (email is in my profile)? I seem to remember that the port was named counterintuitively.....

Thanks Adam - check your mail.

After a lot of mucking about I have managed to update the FW.  Will see if the issue persists through the rest of the day and will report back later.  Thanks again for the concern and help - very much appreciated.

No -- you only see the USB port in that drop-down list when the Macbook is connected to the SU.  Connect the Mac to the SU, then start the Naim Streamer Updater program . . . and you should see the USB port.

In an updaters - yes. Only with a USB cable connected.

In system settings it should be active regardless.

That is what I meant

Exactly HH.

I'm not sure if you are thinking of buying this particular SU, but if so it needs to be fixed first. I never use the remote to find music, just to change volume, go into the menu and occasionally to select radio and presets. Using the remote to find music is just too hard.

For a time I had issues when using both the remote and the (Android) app to control my ND5 XS, the app was also quite slow to identify the ND5 on the network and would loose connection and then have to wait to re-connect.  Another trouble manifested itself if I'd used the app to select music and then tried to use the remote to skip a track or find another album, the two control points would get out of sync and all sorts of strange things happened.

In my case updating the firmware improve matters considerably, but it was only really sorted when I changed the WiFi 'router' (and disabled IGMP snooping again on the new router, even though this hadn't fixed it on the old router).  I conclude that for me it was a rather insidious router issue.

Ok another day passed...

Firmware update didn't solve the issue so I just took the plunge and called Naim.  Spoke to one of their tech service guys (very helpful) who concluded that the issue was, in fact, normal on certain networks.  Apparently the way in which the remote calls up the files on the UPnP server is different to the way an app does.  He checked the settings on the SU and confirmed that it was fault free and advised that the app was indeed the most efficient way to navigate.

Sounds a bit odd to me but he's the expert.  And without wishing to in any way start a 'Naim vs....' debate the Linn remote and apps are both completely seamless so clearly they are both very different technologies.

Anyhow I guess I'll live with that and am happy in the knowledge that it's not a fault.  Now all I have to do is listen. Then decide.

Thank you so much for all the time and help.

Glad to hear that all is relatively stable now.

Enjoy the comparison and do let us know which one you prefer. Curious now

I cannot use the remote as the NDX screen is so far away I can't read it, & suspect thats the way it is for most.  Also my buddy with a Linn system must be the same as I have only seen him use his iPad.   Whats not to like,  sitting in an armchair or even in another room on my 2nd system, scrolling through the iPad app screen menu's that show far far more detail, art & numerous selection & play list options makes me wonder why you want to use the remote.

I don't particularly. It was just in my excitement it was the first thing I reached for and the issue presented itself. The app is fine.

Will post my comparison in a week or so Adam
