Is my 52 Haunted?

Posted by: mikeybaby on 28 May 2016

My 52 switches inputs by itself. While listening in cd mode it jumped to phono without touching, and on a separate occasion just 15 minutes later, it switched itself from stereo to mono. I dont have the remote so it can be excluded.

My CDI sometime shows up track 3 with no cd in and has not been used for days very intermittent, can only assume its another remote control being used in the house??

Do you have a Sky box?  Or perhaps a universal remote somewhere?  Another Naim remote that has been lost down the edge of the sofa?

There is a Sony remote on a coffee table nearby but no one touched it. The 52 sits on a shelf below a Sony Bravia tv which was turned on...could these be contributing factors?

Yes, many TVs radiate high amounts of RF and high frequency hash within close proximity and this can cause issues with logic circuits on some kit - certainly it has been known to be an issue with random switching and non-repsonsive remote control on Naim pre-amps and sources.  Sometimes just moving one or other by as little as an inch can cure the symptoms, otherwise I guess you could try some sort of "shielding".

Tnanks Richard, that explaiuns the problem with my CDI are differnt types of TV  ie Plasma,LED more prone to this?

We had a "sniffer" box in the factory once and it seemed to indicate that Plasma and LCD/LED sets can be just as bad as one another, some brands and models worse than others.  Not a definitive test as limited to just what was on hand over a few weeks, but indicative that flat panels could be the cause of the symptom.

I hope its the tv. I can just trash it,  but a 52?....not so smart!!

This is known to happen with all sorts of kit getting random IR signals too. I recall many customers with West facing windows would report ghost changing input, volume, track etc. at sunset each day. It is bizarrely common.

Sorry to hijack your thread Mikeybaby but quite often when I switch my system on I get this hissing and whistling and crackling emanating from one speaker.  By wriggling the cables about it disappears eventually but I have yet to discover why or what I am doing that makes it go away.

I cover the IR senser when the Sony TV is on.  This stops the random switching for me.

Still switching inputs randomly. Twice in ten minutes. What is going on??? I paid thousands for this?!

Is there any fix?  Please help!

Did you remove the TV?

Posted on: 20 July 2016 by mikeybaby

No I have not. I enjoy watching my favourite  tv programs videos and movies through my Naim equipment.

Just thinking back my CDI as previously stated started to switch mainly to track 3 when the CDI was not in use just on standby.

The system was used in a upstairs room for over twenty years with no problems at all the TV was about 10 feet away and both rooms have a 42inch Plasma Panasonic TV.

It was only when the Naim equipment was relocated to the lounge and was much closer to the TV that this started happening sometimes on a fairly regular basis sometimes it would not happen for two to three weeks a rather stange occurence?

Hope you sort it out.

The reason I ask is that in order to cure the problem it's essential to find the cause.  As mentioned above, some TV sets when located directly above or adjacent to a pre-amp can bombard it with RFI and give rise to false signals to the logic board.  Often just changing the orientation or increasing the distance cures the problem - in particular make sure the screen is not on the exact same plane as the front panel of the pre-amp.  So, try to find out of its caused by the TV position.

Got it. I will hook them up in another room and see if the inputs  switch by themselves over the next few days. Stay tuned and thank you. I want to save this preamp...it is a masterpiece of technology.

Richard, my TV was located as you desrcibed causing the problem on my CDI.
