Various Artists with Asset & Naim App (yet again, sorry)
Posted by: Gavin B on 30 May 2016
I know this has come up time and time again but I still can't seem to get it right.
I think I've got my data files set up correctly, but things aren't displaying as I'd expect when I browse to and play compilation tracks via the Naim App.
Here's what I see in the Naim App:
It lists the tracks, but doesn't show any of the individual artist tracks. The 'play bar' at the bottom of the app screen shows the album artist and not the track artist as does the display on my Qute and ND5XS.
I've tried 'viewing' the album using Kinsky, and that seems to work:
This time the individual track artists is visible - and that's what I want to see in the Naim App.
So, can anyone show me an example of the Naim App working with Asset in the way I want?
If so, perhaps I'll be able to figure out what I've done wrong / not yet done!
Thanks
Gavin
Gavin this is just how I see it with Asset running on my qnas. If there is a better solution I don't know it either yet!
Hi
I am running Asset on my QNAP and have the individual artist under Track Artist, the Album Artist is usually Various, but is often blank.
I do get the individual artist name appear under the track name, as per your Kinsky view.
I hope that helps.
Hi Maxwell
That's great to hear - any chance of a screen shot?
Any tips on how you achieved this?
Hi Gavin,
I'll try a screen shot, but I have not posted one before so it may take a while, but it appears the same way as your Kinsky screenshot.
I also use Metadatics to edit my information, which I may have used for a few albums if they were not ripped in this format. I rip CDs using XLD, which allows editing before ripping.
So, it is probably a combination of these programs.

Another question - is there any way in the Naim app where it can be told to ignore "the" and other articles so that, for example, "The Beatles" sort with B instead of with all the other "The" named groups?
Hi Gavin,
I am having trouble uploading the image, but this should be the link for the screenshot.

I'll keep trying, though may be not tonight.

That's not the Naim App - it's your UPnP server software. Naim App just shows what it's 'told' by your server.
Well, the HDX, which runs its own Naim-designed software, treats "the" in the same fashion, so Naim seem to be okay with this protocol. I agree, it drives me nuts.

It's not the Naim App, it's the server. Asset and MinimServer both can do this for the Naim App. Asset, for example, has a setting called "'The' Artist & Album Handling"
This is one of the reasons I sold off my UnitiServe.
Thanks guys - that actually makes sense now that you mention it.
Thanks, Maxwell - certainly looks like you've managed to do what I want!
(BTW, if anyone else if trying to look at Maxwell's image, copy the whole url into a browser - clicking on the link only seems to take part of it)
Would you be willing to take a snap-shot of the settings you've chosen in Asset (under the Advanced tab)? Similarly, a snap-shot of the properties of one of these file would be really handy.
Thanks again!
Hi Gavin,
Sorry to have mis-led you, but I have just realised that I use MinimServer rather than Asset. I have a Mac, and whilst I started to use Asset, l found out that MinimServer would be better.
I will look for some useful screen shots, but as you can tell, I am not very proficient and have not tinkered with the set-up.
Regards.
I am using Asset and see the same behaviour. When I get a chance I will have a play with the metadata/tagging.
Calling Phil Harris!! Can you show us something from one of Naim's set-ups?
If I remember rightly, with Asset I used to set the album artist as 'various artists' and the song artist as the actual artist and it displayed as a single album with songs by multiple artists.
Dayjay - that's what I believe I've done, but don't get the view I would like (expect?). Could you look to check how you see it? Are you able to check what settings you have in Asset?
Just had a play around with this and checked the Asset Forum. Seems that this is a known issue that has been corrected in the latest version of Asset which is currently in beta. I won't post the link to the forum risking the wrath of the admins.
Yes, I had this issue. Bizarre that freebie Minimserver works as is, and yet Asset (paid) could not (OSX). I did post a question on the eh...other place em site and after a lot of questions to which I had to prove that it was not something I was doing/done it turns out to be a bug. I have down loaded the beta version which has now corrected the issue......for now.
As you were nothing to see here!!!!!!!

"Free" is a funny word in this context. "Donationware" might be more accurate.
"Although MinimServer is free to users, it isn't free of development costs. The main expense is buying equipment for development and testing on the wide range of platforms that MinimServer supports. As well as continuing to add features to MinimServer, I'd like to add support for more platforms, which involves additional equipment costs.
If you've tried MinimServer and decided that you want to use it, please consider helping with the costs of MinimServer development by making a voluntary donation. There's no recommended amount—please give what you feel MinimServer is worth to you."

Bart,
Good point.
Just to clarify. I tired for an evaluation period Minim server and Kinsky to investigate whether the problem was with Asset. The problem was with Asset and thus was reported to the developers.
The point I was making was the irony of something that was "free" to use (albeit a voluntary donation would further aid costs of both Minim Server & Kinsky) working correctly against something I had paid for which did not. I still prefer Asset as I find it easier to configure than Minim Server and controversially I feel Asset to be better quality in the audio domain. I must point out that this is only my opinion. Everyone is free to use whatever UPnP they want.
As far as I'm aware the only thing in life I don't pay for is the air that I breath and walking..O and posting on this forum!!!!!!!!
Normal service is resumed and Asset is now working for me albeit the beta version. So I'm happy to uninstall Minim server.
I am running Asset R5 beta 5 on my RPi, and the old Asset limitation on multiple artist albums is indeed removed.. all artists show up against track in the Naim App. The only downside is that the Asset R5 beta has a bug and not able to send album art from folder.jpg currently.. fingers crossed gets resolved in the next beta.
BTW Dustsox nothing controversial about saying one media server sounds better than the other... I would be very suprised and indeed would be controversial if they didn't.. Especially when you see what happens underneath the covers... after all some people prefer wav to FLAC, or local to web streaming etc.. it's all related. I also prefer the sound of Asset over MinimServer running on a Pi, and prefer a Pi to running on a PC or Mac, but the degree of variation does vary from streamer firmware to firmware.
Simon
Going to download the beta of R5.2 tonight. Got my fingers crossed!
Dusty, I find it interesting as well that the "best" server software packages "out there" are written and maintained by relatively small, independent companies or maybe just PEOPLE. Is there more than one gentleman behind MinimServer? Sometimes a very dedicated specialist, with a narrow focus, does better than a larger diversified company. We are fortunate to have Asset and Minim.
Problem solved! Hurrah! Well done Spoon (at done Asset)
Just add =1 in compilation section of tagging programme, leave various artists tag empty. This will show individual artist against song title on 'Various Artist' compilations.
i use MP3 tag programme to correctly set tags on flac formatted songs. You can batch set the tag in all your compilations in one hit which saves a great deal of time. Works in all of my Compilations. New version of MP3 tag works with flac files, wave files and the dreaded MP3!
