Name MuSo Qb + Naim Unity Qute v1

Posted by: PhilW on 31 May 2016

I just replaced one of my FM radios with a MuSo box. I notice that there's a "multi-room" mode available, and so I updated the firmware on my UnityQute v1 to 3.21 to give it a go.

Qute 3.21 has a new "multiroom" input, which is enabled as per the defaults.  The "name" is the default "multiroom".

The MuSo options also have a "multiroom" setting... but I can't work out precisely how I get one to talk to the other. I notice that if I enable "multiroom" on the MuSo, it does the "glowing light" thing, which implies that it's looking for a stream. My Qute is playing at that point, but presumably the MuSo is failing to hear it.

I checked my networking  and I can see (ping) each of those Naim devices from other devices on my home network, so there's an ICMP connection there at least. I run the Naim app on a 'droid 'phone and it can clearly see both Naim gadgets, so there's no isolation on the WiFi network preventing the communications. I think this is all not the problem.

So does anyone have a step-by-step "this is how you stream from one Naim device to another" in multi-room mode post they could share? I want to make sure I've set all the correct things for this to work.

I can tell you how to do it with the Naim app running on IOS, which is that you go to the "now playing" screen in the app on the one you want to be the source of the multi room and there is an icon in the bottom right of the now playing screen. It's four small boxes arranged in a square. If you touch that, you get a new menu which allows you to adjust the volume on the other units ("rooms").

i imagine the Android app will be similar, but someone ought to be able to tell you exactly.

Afaik you need a UnitiQute 2, or UnitiQute with the 24/192 upgraded hardware.  Multi room doesn't work with original 24/96 streaming hardware.

Yes, Qute v1 can't drive the multiroom but it can be driven

Thanks all. I did not bother to do the hardware upgrade so it may not work for me, although the 3.21 firmware went in ok, so that's half the problem sorted.

The iOS stuff ought to be same on Droid. I'd definitely have missed that, I wasn't even looking there. I think this may work:

  1. Stream from uPNP server to MuSo
  2. Go to the Droid App's "now playing" screen and select "four small boxes" icon
  3. Tell it to play to the "other room" (the Qute 1).

If "it an be driven" then it should work. I've not played with (2) so it's definitely worth a shot.

Thanks all. I'll report back in due course.

Yes I think that should work! Good luck.

Ah, there's no "four squares" thing on the "now playing" screen at all. This is the Droid app, looking at the MuSo, which is enabled for multi-room (although that's an "input setting").

The Qute1 is also enabled for multi-room input (setting in the app).

Can anyone with a MuSo-Qb and an Android Naim app see the "multi-room" icon anywhere? It seems odd that there are settings for multi-room, but no way to turn it on..?

We have a Qb, which multirooms with our 272, and here is a screen grab from the Android app.

Thanks - ok, I'm missing that little "four square" icon. So it's possible, I just need to fiddle with it to find how to turn that on. I'll try this weekend..

Are you running the latest version of the Naim app? The original version wouldn't run Multiroom.

Have you got the 'Multiroom Supplement' which you can download from Naim's website? If not, you should work through this and make sure you haven't missed anything.

It's the latest version from google play v1.7, March 2 2016.

I can't find the supplement on the web site (google has it, but they've removed it from the site it seems).

If you email Naim support they will send it to you.

Also I think you may have to select an input on the muso that can be multi-roomed ie a digital input before you will see the four squares icon but I imagine you did that already anyway.

Got it. I checked the manual (supplement) and I have the correct firmware version. Steps

  1. Ensure "multiroom" is enabled on client Qute1
  2. Go to MuSo QB with Android app and play something.
  3. Press "now playing", and there's the little four-square icon.
  4. Press the icon, and click the button by the "Naim" room (that's the Qute)
  5. Then various volume controls appear and it does what you'd expect.

Works perfectly, thanks all. I'm not sure why it didn't work the first time, as I don't think I did anything different, but perhaps I just didn't see the four-square icon. All good now though, thanks.

Hi

i have a QB and an early Qute, but don't seem to be able to make multiroom work.

i checked the requirements in the multi room supplement and I seem to have the right firmware on the Qute to allow it to act as a client ie 2DXXXXX in the “BC SW” line of the System Status.

Qute has multiroom input enabled, and the QB has the latest firmware 1.4.44 but there is no four squares in the app to select other rooms.

am I missing something?

Thanks

What you have to do is select the input on the QB you want to multiroom, if it's a streamed digital signal then get it actually streaming so you can hear it on the QB, go to the now playing screen and you will see the four squares icon. You touch that and you can turn the volume up on the Qute.

Thanks David,  either I am missing the now playing screen, or there is another issue because there is no 4 squares on any of the screens when connected to the Qb

i am wondering if it is a network issue, or whether the Qute is not able to multiroom and therefore the Qb does not detect it.

I am going to email maim support and see what they say.

Just to check you have found the "Now playing screen", what I mean is that you stream something, let's say it's an album from upnp but it could be anything that is digital, then looking at the screen where the list of tracks it is playing is shown, you click right down on the bottom and up pops a "Now Playing" screen, with info about the track, playing controls and maybe a volume control, if you have set that to show. The four squares icon is on the bottom right hand corner of the now playing screen just to the right of the volume control.

Than,s David ,  I have the right screen, but no 4 squares unfortunately.

Let's see what support can offer, but I suspect the Qute  is too old to support multiroom unfortunately.

You may need to update the firmware on the Qute but that isn't difficult and I don't believe even an old Qute is beyond  help re multiroom. What firmware is your Qute running? You can find out using the spanner key on the remote and its in one of the sub-menus.

Hi

streamer version is 4.4.00,  which I believe is the latest version.  Multi room is enabled in the inputs menu,  IOS app is the latest beta version.
