Unitiserve not finding QNAP HS251+
Posted by: JM D on 01 June 2016
Hello Everyone. I have tried and tried for 1 week to have the Unitiserve registering the QNAP as a share so I can do a differential backup weekly but have failed ...
My setup:
1) QNAP HS251+ and the Unitiserve are connected (ethernet over main) to a NETGEAR switch GS105
2) the NETGEAR switch is connected to an Apple airport extreme
3) the Apple airport extreme is connected to the modem
Prior to this setup, I had the US & QNAP connected to the Apple airport extreme. But then as now, the n serve app can not register the QNAP. I either use an iMac or a laptop (Win 10) to run n serve & when I "force add" the QNAP by entering a) the IP address and folder (called "naim") b) the username and c) the password. N serve does list the QNAP but when I go the backup set up it does not show as an available option from the drop down menu.
Note: all software are at their latest version (Airport extreme, US and QNAP).
I love the convenience of ripping on US but I am starting to regret my Audiogon purchase ... Maybe it is because it is a used US and it may have issues ...
Thank you in advance for your help,
Jean (from Seattle)
Hi Jean,
I experienced similar frustrations when I had a US and first tried to set up a backup folder on my QNAP HS-251. Eventually I discovered that the problem was due to the backup folder automatically being created with a Recycle bin folder contained within it even though the folder appeared to be empty.
Try creating the backup network share on your HS-251+ without a Recycle bin as follows. Log in to the QNAP web GUI and select Control Panel => Privilege Settings => Shared Folders and select the Shared Folder tab. Then click on Create => Shared Folder and under Advanced Settings clear the tick against 'Enable Network Recycle Bin.'
It should then be possible to select the folder created above as the backup destination for the US.
I have since sold the US and now just use the HS-251 running Asset UPnP.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jean - there is a very specific protocol for adding a backup destination, and it has frustrated many a UServe owner! I will send you off an email and am happy to try to talk you through it over the phone.
One point -- I have always been most successful doing it from the UServe's web interface, rather than nServe for OS X. (1) make a new SHARED folder on your nas. Make sure you create it as a shared folder not a regular folder (2) Use nServe for OS X to make it a "music share." (3) go to the web interface for the UServe and go to the Add Backup item under the Music Stores menu (which itself is, I think, within the System menu).

This is a great tip. The newly created shared folder MUST be empty, and if the folder gets created with a Recycle Bin in it, that can be an issue.
How do I access the "web interface for the Userve" ?
From the UnitiServe reference manual:
1.1.2 The Web Browser Display Interface
If UnitiServe is installed in a home network the External
Display can be duplicated by any Flash enabled web
browser
To access the External Display Interface from a web
browser, open the web browser and type the unique
“name” of your UnitiServe into the browser address field.
The name is the last four characters of the MAC address
(excluding the colon separators) printed on the rear
panel preceded by NSSRV. A typical “name” would be
NSSRV5E6F.
Did you have Ethernet over main in your previous setup?
i'm always suspect of ethernet over main, as I have had connectivity issues with all that I tried. Was in the beginning of that technology though.
Using the web interface for US, I can see the Music Share with an online
status and active yes status.
But even when the status is "online", I get the following error message
from the US web interface:
"There are no shares currently online. Please ensure that the share you
wish to convert to a Music Backup is online"
When all else fails -- send an email to Naim support. Phil Harris at Naim is SUPER helpful; he can log into your Mac and 'drive' it and get you sorted out. This is absolutely THE frustrating issue with the UnitiServe - setting up the backup.
Another trick -- keep trying.
When all else all else fails, get shot of the US. If you are already happy with a NAS, it adds no value and getting it to back up is, as you are discovering, a pain in the neck. This may not be entirely helpful, but it's an option. Getting shot of mine was the best thing I did. When I want to back up my Qnap, I just plug in a USB drive, press the little copy button, and off it goes. The NAS sounds better too.
Have you enabled all your QNAP folders, where you intend to keep your music, as folders with 'public' full access rights?
Otherwise US will nit be able to acceess it.
I followed all your advice (thank you) the best I was able to achieve is get to register the qnap folder as a store. However it wont convert to a share that I can back it up to. As for now, i am going to copy manually all the files, to the qnap and imac to have a backup.
JM D - if you email me directly (email is in my profile) I will send you instructions on setting up US with QNAP.
Adam
@HH - Are you using the TP on the NAS? Getting rid of the TP made my Unitiserv sound a lot better. :-)
Nope, just the little power supply that comes with the Qnap.
Ok I am trying again ...
I can establish the QNAP as a store. And convert it back to a share using the NAIM web application. But said application states that there are 'no share online' when I go thru the menu of looking for shares to be used as a backup.
Have you activated the folders you want to use?
Adam, by 'activated' do you mean 'created' ?

I'm pretty sure that's not right. Once it's a store, it'll have created in it the HQ, MQ etc folders, at which point it's no longer empty and cannot be converted to a backup.
I'm pretty sure the sequence is merely Shared Folder -> Share -> Backup Location.
From the user's manual: "Add Backup: Enables an empty Network Share to be nominated as a backup location." There is nothing about making the location a Store first; try my version!
From memory, if it's a backup store it won't be online. Why not just load Asset on the Qnap and put the Serve back on Audiogon. Life's too short.
Once it's a Backup Location, you can use n-Serve for OS X to schedule backups to it. That's when you'll know it's a proper Backup Location -- when you can use it as a backup. HH is correct -- Backup Locations are not "online" as music shares or stores.

This process builds character. You got through it, and now you're a character.
Moi aussi. Japanese anime characters.

Please check the following
Via QNAP web application: Privilege Settings > Shared Folders > Backup > read / write is enabled for 'everyone'
Via n-Serve app:
Server > Maintenance > Network Stores > BackUp Devices > Backup > Online
Ok when I go to create a new folder named uniti on the QNAP (I make sure there is no empty bin).
The I go the nserve and add manually a share by typing:
//10.0.1.2/uniti
I then the following message from n serve:
"It was not possible to add the share \uniti on 10.0.1.2
PingHots: SocketException - The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for
Click the FORCE ADD button to add it to the database"
Should I (click the FORCE ADD button) ?
Adam, I
do not have an "everyone" menu in QNAP.
In the SHARED FOLDER, I have Admin and I selected full permission.
I do not know where and how to enable a guest access (do I need to ?)
I googled the message I keep getting when I create a share:
The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for
Why do I get the error: "The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for"?

There are a couple of possibilities here:
- Try using the correct host name like 'www.domain.com' instead of 'domain.com'.
- Avoid the runtime DNS resolution and replace the RemoteHost/URL/Server/etc with the hosts numerical ip address value.
