Unitiserve not finding QNAP HS251+

Posted by: JM D on 01 June 2016

Hello Everyone. I have tried and tried for 1 week to have the Unitiserve registering the QNAP as a share so I can do a differential backup  weekly but have failed ...

My setup:
1) QNAP HS251+ and the Unitiserve are connected (ethernet over main) to a NETGEAR switch GS105
2) the NETGEAR switch is connected to an Apple airport extreme
3) the Apple airport extreme is connected to the modem

Prior to this setup, I had the US & QNAP connected to the Apple airport extreme. But then as now, the n serve app can not register the QNAP.  I either use an iMac or a laptop (Win 10)  to run n serve & when I "force add" the QNAP by entering a) the IP address and folder (called "naim") b) the username and c) the password. N serve does list the QNAP but when I go  the backup set up it does not show as an available option from the drop down menu.

Note: all software are at their latest version (Airport extreme, US and QNAP).

I love the convenience of ripping on US but I am starting to regret my Audiogon purchase ... Maybe it is because it is a used US and it may  have issues ...

Thank you in advance for your help,

Jean (from Seattle)

Adam, I

do not have an "everyone" menu in QNAP.

In the SHARED FOLDER, I have Admin and I selected full permission.

I do not know where  and how to enable a guest access (do I need to ?)

Yes - you do.

Otherwise your US will not be alowed to save anything to your NAS.

Can you please email me directly (email is in my profile) and I will walk you through the set up, including screenshots?

Adam

J-M, are ALL devices on your home network using the 10.0.x.x series of IP addresses?  Do you use an Apple Airport Extreme or Time Capsule as a router?

Most US ISP's provide routers that default to the 192.168.x.x range of addresses.  I want to make sure that you don't have 2 'networks' running and devices on one can't see the other.

No - I didn't....  Double check my surname - easy to make mistakes there....

I had a similar problem occur when I "upgraded my router". Not sure folks are aware of this problem but Phil fixes it for me in one email.

See below and see if this helps:

"We have already asked the US distributor to contact you regarding this and they should be doing so however the issue that you have is that your ISP is (un)helpfully hijacking unknown DNS lookups (used by the serve to find the IP address of network storage devices) and redirecting them to a nice “helper” site (the sort of thing that says “You typedwww.fbay.co.uk … did you really mean www.ebay.co.uk?) – the IP address you give is a web search engine so would appear to confirm this. This is rather naughty of the ISP as they shouldn’t really be doing that but seems to be increasingly common nowadays.

The easiest fix is to set the DNS lookup addresses on your router to be a well behaved DNS server such as Googles DNS servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 – do that and then reboot your Unitiserve and NAS and you should be good to go."

Takes 2 minutes to fix. Took me a month to find
