CD or Server

Posted by: Naimless on 02 June 2016

I am currently upgrading to a Naim system and not sure whether to include a CD player or Unitiserve.   I have a stack of CDs but now generally just play download music.

Any recomendations as the sound is important but really just for general listening and not dissecting particular albums etc.

Wow!

Thanks Innocent Bystanders, and David O,Higgans I will file this info. away.

I'm ripping with my MM/NAS, and it is a piece of cake. Furthermore, if music of choice isn't available on 24 bit H Res, then the Silver disk is still  required.

And in my case, Audirvana is an inexpensive intro into the world of Streaming.

The MM & Audirvana fulfilled the requirements of 1-3, and the Ndac converts the digital signal into analog!

Thanks!

That's enough learning in one day!

Taking it slow,  on the CD end, I got it, beef up my Cdx2 with a 555PS.

.

.

But, I'm limited to iTunes, which I purchase tunes for a buck, rip CD's all of which is combined into my library, which consists of 1500 songs!

The tunes you've purchased for a buck are not in cd-quality format; they are in a "lossy" format which will never come close to what you can do with a cdx2/555PS and cd's.  You'll end up needing to improve your music library, but such can wait until you've got the hardware sorted out.

Just one thing, re DAC: you can use optical out from the MM, but best quality is bypassing that and using the usb output, however that is then prone to electrical noise which can degrade the audio, depending on your DAC, I use a Hugo, and find that best sound is with a usb/SPDIF isolator/converter between <I use a Gustard U12 which in UK costs about £120). At the end of the day it depends on the quality you desire, and of course what the rest of your system lets through

In my view, far too many people focus on how to find a cheaper way to achieve what the US achieves, and overlook the simplicity of how it achieves it.

David. Have you tried comparing your files using the US as a server versus using something like Minimserver or Asset installed on your NAS with the US switched off?

You may well be running the absolute optimum configuration for maximum musical communication in your system. Equally, you might be listening to a bottleneck. It's easy and reversible to find out. Assuming you haven't already.

Right now, I really only have one source, Cdx2.

That's my Music Room:

Cdx2/282/HCDR/3 x 250.2/Fraimlite/Briks

But Card Parties and guest, they can't hear the difference, I stream from my iTunes library wireless Airport Extreme to Airport Express.

Family Room Emotiva dac 1/Primare Pre 30/ Arcam P1 mono Blocks/ Vienna Accoustic Baby Grands.

Rec Room Emotive Processor.

But for the Music Room, Thanks to you guys!

I thinking hard wired Ethernet/800MM/usb SPDIF/Ndac/282/.........

With Audirvana, I think I heard mention of pure music, but that should do! Correct?

Allante - if you are really serious about streaming, I think you'd best served with the following combination:

  • NDX - it is a very talented streamer. (If you are in Europe and would like more details please email me directly - email is in my profile).
  • NAS (for exaple QNAP HS-215 'silent NAS' - I could walk you through a detailed set up (again - email may be more efficient)
  • For your NAS you could start with 2 x 4TB drives (working in RAID mode).
  • Software: MinimServer - it's free to download, but it's good to make a donation if you intend to use it.

This would free you up from running a computer all the time. It's a well proven combination, that many forum members use on a daily basis (me included).

And you need be no less serious about streaming, and get what at leat numbers of people on this forum have said is better SQ for considerably less cost, with Mac Mini, audirvans, USB/SPDIF isolator/converter and Hugo (no need for other NAS' though no problem if one exists)

And it is said that even greater SQ is possible substituting Melco for MM/Av.

You pays your money and meke your choice... And of course make sure your ears are happy!

+1, more flexible, Tidal and Qobuz support, less cost and much better sq per £ and the latest version of the software is fantastic. I wish I'd discovered it sooner, would have saved me a lot of money
