In a 42.5/140, the power supply in the NAP140 has to supply both the power amplifier circuits and the 42.5.

When there is a musical peak, the power amp draws a lot of current to drive the loudspeakers, which in turn creates a ripple in the supply to the 42.5, which then affects the musical signal into the NAP140.

What the hicap does is to provide a much larger and more stable power supply for the 42.5, allowing a higher quality music signal to reach the NAP140.

In summary, it makes a 42/5/140 sound even better.  It is a well proven and greatly admired improvement which turns a wonderful amp into a classic. Very much worth doing, so long as funds permit and the hicap has been recently serviced (i.e. within the last 8 years)

Hope this helps Garry.

Best regards, FT

In simple terms it powers the 42.5 instead of robbing valuable current from the 140. The Hi Cap transformer gives you a much more stable supply and better isolation, which you should notice straight away. It has a kind of 'de-cluttering' effect on the music. Everything should be easier to follow with little nuances more noticeable.

If you like the sound now it's only going to get better with the insertion of a Hi Cap.

I'd go as far as saying that even today a good 72 with a recently serviced Hi Cap will be very hard to beat until you get to the upper echelons of the 52's and 552's.

Get one.  I have recently and was amazed.  It was like adding a new poweramp to my system I could not believe it (HC / 32.5 / Nap 100 / UQ2).
