UK's Best Part Time Band.

Just finished watching this on Beeb 4.

A 4 week long "talent show", with no prizes, no recording contract for the winner.........so different right away.

Just a chance for bands, none of whom will ever make a living playing music, to have their chance to appear on tv for a brief moment.....................folks who simply keep on playing for the pure joy of doing so.

Well worth a look, on catchup, on BBC iPlayer.

Yes, they were brilliant, as were the other band to make it through, the Ska outfit.

I have really enjoyed all 3 episodes. The format is interesting and they obviously made an effort to visit as many of the entrants as possible; distance no object. The choice of music experts in Midge Ure, Peter Hook and Jazzy B has worked as all of them have a wealth of experience and are all open minded on musical genres.

I agreed when Midge Ure stated that modern music is drowning in a sea of mediocrity, partly due to the prime time talent shows. This programme has been a breath of fresh air and showed the depth of talent that exists in the UK. I haven't necessarily agreed with of all the selections that will appear in next week's final, but that isn't the point, since there is no official grand prize.

Hopefully all the contributors will benefit from the publicity and find audiences to listen to their output. In the case of Russian Flying Squirrel this is through crowdfunding to allow them to record a debut album. I thought that the level they were working at was astounding but could see why they did not progress into the final on the back of their debut on stage. I liked what they did so much I subscribed to allow them to record.

Looking forward to next week's finale. This is a reminder of why channels such as BBC 4 are worthwhile, I couldn't see a commercial outfit taking this much time and trouble.

Since my original post, I've been quite surprised at how few of the folks on here seem to be watching this series, judging from the lack of comments posted.

I agree with you that BBC 4 are to be praised for putting this out in the first place, and can't imagine any of the other major channels spending time and resources doing a programme such as this.

I've been really taken with the sheer enthusiasm of all the bands so far, getting together in the spare bedroom to play each week, for example, reminds me of me!

We're really only seeing the showcased "best of the best", but the levels of musical ability and entertainment value shown, has been  quite amazing.

Many of the real "no gigs so far, ever" bands would, in an ideal world, make it quite easily onto their local scene, but in todays world of the X factor etc, simply carry on for the sheer enjoyment of making music.

I've also been quite impressed by the comments of the judges so far, who admit to having been impressed by bands who would normally be considered well outside their own comfort zone.

As for Rhod Gilbert.............what's he like?

Dave.

That's them off and running then.

Just a heads up, though, the final is being shown tonight, rather than next Friday.
