Mu-So (Loudness settings)

Posted by: simonbeslin on 08 June 2016

Hello,

I purchased a mu-so last week and first thing I am so pleased about it. I'm not an expert, neither an audiophile, but I sure love Music and listen to it in good conditions and with simplicity. Tidal premium (FLAC) and the Mu-So are then well fullfiling my needs. It is for me a good set tup.

Never the less, I would like to talk with you about settings and have your experience and opinions on that. My mu-so is setup close to a wall on a buffet (15cm) so I put the settings on "less than 25cm" to reduce the bass reflex.

1/ Curious about the "loudness" option and plebiscite by many on internet, I think it cover the music too much, and unbalances the sound. It affect it in a bad way because I think it becomes too "boomy". I understand that the bass boost desappears when the volume increases but seems to me, even if Listen to music like Rock, Hip Hop, or Pop Music, the sound become aletered like if we put a sheet before the speaker. My feeling is that the bass are boost but also swallow the treebles and mid.

I would like to know if you share my perspective and if it is recommended to listen to the mu-so with or without "loudness' activated.

2/ If the loudness option effects are desappearing when volume increases, I think it should disappear more quickly. Let me explain :

Seems to me, this option can be meaningfull when having diner with friends at home and you need background music at very low volume (15%). Then with loudness activated, it helps thicken the sound and give it more consistency.

Don't you think the treshold for this feature should be at lower volume ? I will help not ticking and unticking the option all the time.

I am very pleased with my mu-so, I think loudness should be always desactivated because it kind of ruins the great sound out of it,exept at some occasion when bakcground music is needed but at very low volume (no more than 15%). Since this option is activated by default when setting up the mu-so, maybe I am wring and and i really would like to know your opinion and point of view on this subject.

I hope I made myself clear enough (please escuse my english) and I wish you a very pleasant day,

Wainting to reading from you,

Best,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I have set my loudness to off on my muso qb. I too found it spoiled the presentation of the music. I found on a friends full size muso that it really needs to be about 30cm minimum from the rear wall (45cm sounded much better still) for the mid and top to open up and match the superb quality of the bottom end. However close it was to the wall I found the " closer than 25cm" setting didnt work very well. Try listening to the "more than 25cm" setting.

Also after only a week the muso will still be settling down (burning in). The sound will get better and better over a few weeks of use.

Happy listening

Ok thanks for your feedback ! So even if it is pretty close to the wall (I can't do something else) you advise me to listen only with the "more than 25cm" mode ?

Best,

Simon

I would certainly suggest you try it as its very easy to do. I really liked the results, as did my friend. Also try the muso at around 45cm from the wall, just to hear what its capable of if you ever manage to place it in a different position.

Thanks, I'll  try, just don't want it to be too boomy :-)

Mu-So or Mu-So QB ? I was talking about the mu-so (original). The good thing to know would be what setting is the default/natural one ? More than 25cm or Less than 25cm ? Then I would prefer go to the "true" sound, the more natural and less modified. :-)

FYI, I tried at "more" than 25 cm but it became too boomy for me. I will try it a little more to be sure...

Simon, welcome to the Muso sound characteristics, boxy sound, with a boomy bass. To design a product of its type that needs siting 45CM from a wall to eradicate this is surely absurd, and a shortcoming of the design. I have heard the the QB gives a more balanced sound, but not heard one, so can't comment. Sorry that doesn't help you Simon, but you are finding exactly the same as I did.

Hello Kermit, Thanks for your input. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased with the sound ouf my mu-so. I just find that there is too much bass on some settings. But if loudness is off and room position is on "less than 5cm" then I have a sound that suit my expectation and even beyond that, so I'm gonna stick with that :-). I just wanted to have your settings and have your point of view !
