Euros 2016

So, I was tempted to say the competition starts properly today with the England and Wales opening games but after Payet's glorious goal last night I think that would be a tad unfair...
Anyhow, given the English RU boys are beating Australia in their own back yard, the Test team are in fine form against Sri Lanka and with high hopes around the whole nation for our Olympians in Rio can England (or even Wales or NI) deliver?
naim_nymph posted:So England can only beat Wales if they have an obvious offside goal mysteriously allowed,
then a second goal allowed that was scored a couple of minutes after the game should have ended.
Is there any match fixing going on?
We should be told...
Debs
Debs - Vardy would have been offside had an England player headed the ball goalward but it was clear that the ball was headed by a Wales defender, Ashley Williams. The officials did well in spotting it.
...and we'll gloss over the two Welsh handballs in the box..

What are you talking about????
Vardy not offside and Sturridge scored in injury time!!!!
And while England still look like they could struggle to hit the biggest barn door, they outplayed Wales for about 80 minutes of the 94...
Sheesh
Wales were lucky to have been in the game at all, to be fair. One side turned up to play football, the other to stop them doing it.
Congrats for your Team guys.

Gary, I hope you had your fingers crossed and were winking maniacally when you say "One side turned up to play football" .. my oh my.

Lazy and hopeless. Not sure how long he'll last under Pep G.

Couldn't be more serious.
Wales were not in the game, and the scoreline flattered them. You don't get points for effort i'm afraid.
Absolutely brilliant by Northern Ireland! Superb fans as well.

Agree with Gary. They're entitled to set up defensively but surely not when they have the best players and more passion than England (according to Mr Bale).

+2
For the second half of the Russia game and the first half of todays, he was a passenger.
He does a great impression of somebody skipping around a field, try to get their nail varnish dry.
I think we can guess starting line up for Slovakia match...

Good point, Tony. There was nowhere near enough handling of the ball, and the ball was far too round, and as to those stubby little goal posts no wonder the ref didn't bother award any tries, and all the scrumming seems to be done outside the ground by the supporters and the police.
I'm not going to watch any more of this Euro 2016 rubbish, will wait a couple of weeks for the TdF which is always worth watching for at least the scenery : )
Debs
Shock horror lady gets offside rule wrong!!!
Only joking Debs.
Eng v Wales looked like an FA Cup match between a Premiership team and a Championship team. Lots of sound and fury, plenty of low level fouling largely unpunished as they pulled and pushed each other endlessly. Precious little quality.
Congrats to Hodgson for apparently getting the subs right. Maybe a gold star for picking the right starting eleven next time?
Bruce
Why so jaundiced, Bruce? No one is claiming it was one of the greatest games ever played. It was a spectacle that caught a significant proportion of the public's imagination. People want bread and circuses.
Chris
I guess when it comes to football I'm actually a neutral. I'm not terribly patriotic about Engerland and watch games (often only parts of games) on TV only rarely in the hope of seeing skill and entertainment. I have seen a lot more of that in other matches.
I'm clearly not a fan as such.
Bruce
Job done Azzurri.I was working, couldn't watch television.Somebody told me it was not a nice match anyway

I saw some of it, Fabio. The Azzurri played within themselves. I guess since they got the 3 points from their opening game they felt they could afford to be measured against Zlatan's lot. And he didn't do much.
Mike
Very kind of you Mike, thank you.
Yep, game a bit boring, class goal though
And no flares thrown to the pitch
How the f+++ did people get into the Croatia/Czech game with all those flares/fireworks?
Isn't France supposed to be on heightened alert? Gives absolutely no confidence in French security.
Apparently it was a planned protest against the Croatian Football Federation.

Interesting, Hook. Given the seemingly ever-widening corruption surrounding FIFA, it will be interesting to see how the authorities approach this protest.

RoI fans will justifiably claim they should have had a penalty when the game was 0-0 but that aside they were taken apart by a resurgent Belgium. Even though Italy have nothing to play for in the final group game it's hard to see Ireland beating them. The Auzzurri just don't give games away (I think it's in their DNA).
