Euros 2016

So, I was tempted to say the competition starts properly today with the England and Wales opening games but after Payet's glorious goal last night I think that would be a tad unfair...

Anyhow, given the English RU boys are beating Australia in their own back yard, the Test team are in fine form against Sri Lanka and with high hopes around the whole nation for our Olympians in Rio can England (or even Wales or NI) deliver?

Good point, Tony. There was nowhere near enough handling of the ball, and the ball was far too round, and as to those stubby little goal posts no wonder the ref didn't bother award any tries, and all the scrumming seems to be done outside the ground by the supporters and the police.

Nice one Debs, had me creased up.

Absolutely the funniest post across all forums this year, if there was a a competition, I'd be voting for this one.

Regards,

Dave.

Another disjointed and uninspired England display. Plenty of huff and puff but predictable and static. Did their 'keeper actually have to save anything in the second half despite our 'dominance'? If so I cannot recall it. Best player on the pitch was a Liverpool player, and Slovakian.

We did have better haircuts though.

Could Eddie Jones take over the footie team too? We might then have some hunger, bite and desire evident.

I can just see the preening Ronaldo waiting in the wings to send Hodgson into retirement, and England home early again. Then we can get on with enjoying watching Wales perhaps!

Looked to me like no team turned up to play football ...

Look. Mr Jones might be different class when it comes to instructing a bunch of unfit fatties to push the opposing bunch of unfit fatties around a field. But soccer’s a whole different ballgame.

I can’t see why Roy’s getting so much criticism, it’s not his fault none of the team can hit a barn door from 10 paces. I dread to think what will happen if they manage to get to penalties.

It makes you wonder what they do in training, they obviously can’t be practicing crossing and shooting. On the plus side, Roy’s holding back his secret weapon, (Ross Barkley) for a clash with one of the big boys, apparently he’s been teaching Ross to be more like Gareth Bale. Personally, I think he’ll look silly with a top knot.

Again, I'm torn.

On the one hand Hodgson is still clearly out of his depth.

On the other, Fatcat is correct. It's simple. Get the ball. Kick the ball. At the goal. Not the Goalkeeper. And it's not meant to be conversion either. Aim below the crossbar. I can do it  I'mthough I'm unfit and one of my legs has got a bone in it. I wish I could be paid £100,000 a week to miss sitters.

Actually that reminds me, I had a teacher called Miss Sitters. We called her Sitty Sitters and challenged ourselves to repeat it over and over without adding a couple of 'H's. But then we were eight. We then had a supply teacher called Mr Standing. We thought that was hilarious.

And your sporting pedigree is....?

Putting to one side the English pack (although I'd be fascinated to see any of the Premier League's finest undergo one of their training workouts), the backs would leave any English footballer for dead in terms of fitness.

Of course were you to have been simply joking, then no harm done.

Calm down. It must have been Hodgson's cunning plan all along, A plan so cunning that a cunning fox by the name of Foxy Cunning could have come up with it in a moment of extreme cunning.

Wales were lucky to have been in the game at all, to be fair. One side turned up to play football, the other to stop them doing it.

Gary, I hope you had your fingers crossed and were winking maniacally when you say "One side turned up to play football" .. my oh my.

Couldn't be more serious.

Wales were not in the game, and the scoreline flattered them. You don't get points for effort i'm afraid.

I think this is spot on - Wales needed to be less afraid of you. In addition I think this is the best England squad for years, you go forward with great pace and terrorised the group. Unlucky to come away with 5 points from what I saw.

The decision to drop 6 players was a massive mistake only because you didn't achieve the result you required for a decent qualification, you hammered Slovakia in every way bar the result. However, Roy was making excuses before the game had started so I guess he knew it was a mistake deep down himself.

The English press and fans are doing what the English do best and that is to undermine their own team, undermine the manager, undermine the whole campaign. That said, I do enjoy watching them ripping their own people to shreds.

Saw a great banner on Facebook... England won the battle, Wales won the war.....

I still think you're going to have a good overall competition, and I wouldn't be surprised to see you win the whole thing despite your best efforts to fail as a collective.

From Wales point of view, we've achieved what we set out to do on qualification - and in some style bar the England match. Anything else from here on is a bonus, but we've shown we should be capable of competing with any of the sides in our half of the knockout rounds - so we go on in hope.

Best of luck with your half of the draw - it'll be interesting after the Iceland game, and even that is not a gimme given your inability to put the ball in the net so far.

Yes Jamie, who would have thought that England would have made it through ... I wish them all the luck against Iceland; I wonder who's looking after Iceland whilst their fans are at the games ?

All this stress............. If you turn Dutch you can just watch as an objective observer, much more relaxing............

I see Roy Hodgson has been talking to the press about how happy he is that the team are facing Iceland on Monday instead of Portugal. He hopes and expects all to go well but admits he has concerns the opposition in the next few games, including Tesco, Nisa Local and the 2nd eleven from the Londis Ladies could present a stiff challenge.

On a serious note, if Iceland beat England then that would be a poisonous chalice indeed for Roy Hodgson's reputation as an English Manager.
