Euros 2016

So, I was tempted to say the competition starts properly today with the England and Wales opening games but after Payet's glorious goal last night I think that would be a tad unfair...
Anyhow, given the English RU boys are beating Australia in their own back yard, the Test team are in fine form against Sri Lanka and with high hopes around the whole nation for our Olympians in Rio can England (or even Wales or NI) deliver?
In!Here we go.
Great match De Sciglio and Giaccherini.
Now England against Iceland . Come on guys
1 -1. Did the equaliser remind anyone else of Rory Delap at Stoke?
C.
Are England sleep walking out of the Euros?
Oops.
G
England out of Europe for the second time in 4 days!!
Boris has already contacted Roy Hodgson, if anyone can guide us out of Europe he can

I thought Italy thoroughly deserved their win over Spain this afternoon, Fabio. Germany will have to be at the top of their game when they play them next.
Italy are the best team in the tournament in my view
Well my fears that Hodgson would sap the life and sparkle out of England's young gun proved depressingly accurate. In my view the only England players to emerge from the tournament with any credit were Walker and, for his two cameo sub appearances, Rashford.

He hopes and expects all to go well but admits he has concerns the opposition in the next few games, including Tesco, Nisa Local and the 2nd eleven from the Londis Ladies could present a stiff challenge.
On a serious note, if Iceland beat England then that would be a poisonous chalice indeed for Roy Hodgson's reputation as an English Manager.
Will the next proposed English manager step forward for the firing squad..?

Not looking forward to Tuesday's headlines...
"Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Anthony Eden, Clement Attlee, Henry Cooper, Lady Diana, vi Har slått Dem Alle sammen, vi Har slått Dem Alle sammen! Maggie Thatcher, heyrirðu í mér? Maggie Thatcher ... strákarnir þínir tók helvíti af a berja! strákarnir þínir tók helvíti af a berja!"
Southgate already being talked about as Hodgson's successor
In my despair in the face of another England failure, I forgot to congratulate Iceland. They worked hard, played to their strengths, didn't spoil or throw themselves about. And with two forwards, they didn't 'park-the-bus'. Well done you boys and good luck against the hosts in the next round. I'll be supporting you.
Rashford's fault, he had enough time.
Manager? The way things are going, Jeremy Corbyn.
Cheers,
OW
Not surprised, not angry. Their is a pattern to this, anyone who really expected it to be different is a fool (or a fan).
- Other teams improve through a tournament. Not us.
- Other teams have a plan, they maybe even have more than one. Not us.
- Other teams appear hungry. Not us
- Other teams are teams.
Apparently we had the better players man-for-man. Maybe we should get poorer ones and make them actually play as a unit?
Iceland executed their game perfectly, with energy and no little skill. I didn't even think it was a penalty since Sterling had lost control of the ball. We throw forwards on without a clue how they will play, lacked pace on the ball, lacked movement, lacked a single meaningful goal attempt in the 2nd half. So Euros 2016. W1 D2 L1. Fans rioting in the streets of Marseille. How utterly depressing.
Hodgson, the man to call when you want to negotiate a swift exit from Europe. His phone will be ringing....

Cheer up. England beat the Aussies 3-0 in the Rugby, so not all is doom and gloom. It is just soccer, rugby's poor cousin.
A good friend of mine who plays in a (very this year) successful regional league football team thinks its about the national team footballers being paid too much money. They don't have the raw drive. and passion anymore.. it is about the money. After all I understand some of Icelandic team maintain part time jobs as well as playing in the national side. Perhaps the brexit situation might improve things if it reduces the likelihood of simply throwing money at importing talent in the top leagues and encourages the training and nurturing of more home grown talent with real passion and drive..

I note in the two post match interviews on the BBC website Joe Hart has found the time to put on his over-sized blingy watch, and Rooney his glittery diamond ring. I jest not.
Guys, you really don't help yourselves do you.
Mind you overpaid footballers from other nations are performing well for their countries at these tournaments, and looking like they have the passion and desire.

Let's not just put this down as a bad performance of the English national team. Iceland has played pretty decent as is not the easy opponent everybody wants us to believe. So yes the performance of the English team missed passion etc like the Spanish National team, but still there is an opponent as well in these games....
Bert, don't get me wrong, Iceland were good .. They won, despite many of the technical attributes going England's way.. and that is what it was all about which is precisely my point. The performance of England had been consistent in the ways I describe through the earlier Euro16 games.. in my opinion.

Well look at Portugal.. they have one of the most well paid footballers in Europe.. decidedly lack lustre.. but at least they won their last match. Obviously it's not all about money.. But it's also how money is used to develop and nurture players as well as simply rewarding and buying talent.
Germans paid too much as well.... Turks are overpaid for sure....
Look at Ronaldo how determined he is on the field...
it is not about money but work ethic and desire to be there instead of private beach with top models etc...
Iceland were excellent, a proper handful. What irritates me is hearing commentators and players talking about getting England back 'to where they belong' with this ridiculous sense of entitlement. Iceland earn their results, we seem to think they are owed.
We have not been a first rank football nation for a generation.
