Euros 2016

So, I was tempted to say the competition starts properly today with the England and Wales opening games but after Payet's glorious goal last night I think that would be a tad unfair...
Anyhow, given the English RU boys are beating Australia in their own back yard, the Test team are in fine form against Sri Lanka and with high hopes around the whole nation for our Olympians in Rio can England (or even Wales or NI) deliver?

Look at Ronaldo how determined he is on the field...
it is not about money but work ethic and desire to be there instead of private beach with top models etc...
+1 .. Precisely.
Chap on Radio just compared the population size to Dudley. "Imagine if we could only select players from the town of Dudley? And they were managed by a dentist..."
That's true Jamie.I saw the match and Iceland was a very good team, very determined,Couldn't believe some English players threw the ball away like that.Sorry for your lost.
Not as sorry as we are!
Bruce Woodhouse posted:'A good friend of mine who plays in a (very this year) successful regional league football team thinks its about the national team footballers being paid too much money.'
I note in the two post match interviews on the BBC website Joe Hart has found the time to put on his over-sized blingy watch, and Rooney his glittery diamond ring. I jest not.
Guys, you really don't help yourselves do you.
Mind you overpaid footballers from other nations are performing well for their countries at these tournaments, and looking like they have the passion and desire.
The England teams really are an enigma. In the second half, the players looked like rabbits caught in the headlights. I think the usual reasons trotted out for these disappointments really don't explain it; the reasons are more complex. I noticed that, unlike most other teams who respond to going a goal down by upping their efforts, the England team become instantly demoralised and fall apart. Hodgson's tactics are a complete mystery - why does he insist on placing players in positions they're unfamiliar with?
Still, at least we've got Wales to cheer on.
Bruce Woodhouse posted:this ridiculous sense of entitlement.
With England leaving Europe in other events last week, this appears to be a common theme.

I don't follow association football but I thought the England team were quite used to losing?

Oh, that hurt!
Bruce Woodhouse posted:Iceland were excellent, a proper handful. What irritates me is hearing commentators and players talking about getting England back 'to where they belong' with this ridiculous sense of entitlement. Iceland earn their results, we seem to think they are owed.
We have not been a first rank football nation for a generation.
Bruce
Totally agree. 'Winning' the penalty an equally irritating phrase...but as we didn't even qualify I can hardly gloat.
Well done Iceland!

Come on Wales!
OK, so next England Manager..?
Papers trotting out some of the usuals but no-one can seem to think of an ideal fit.
Respected, experienced, shrewd, tactical, respected, knows the game.
How about...
It may not be over yet, have the postal goals been counted?
Anyway, they don't leave until Article 50 has been invoked, surely?
Sadly, Standard & Poor have just downgraded the England team to two lions.

At least we would be better at diving with this bloke in charge. We are as bad at faking it as we are at the rest of the game

Good idea, Jamie.
I heard Ian Watmore, ex Chief Exec of FA, being interviewed on R4 this morning. The names he suggested were Alladyce, Southgate and Pardew. Hardy inspiring, and I dread to think what brand of football England would play under Big Sam (KevinW will no doubt have a view ). I suppose Southgate has done well with the Under 21s but he's hardy proven at the top level. I suppose with the team being very young there might be a case for getting a young manager like Bournemouth's Howe, and giving him several years to build a competitive team. Striving for Instant success e.g. Russia 2018, seems likely to result in the familiar disappointment. We need a new, long-term approach.
People in the know about international football knew about this Icelandic team many of the players where part of a successful under 21 side whose coach was sitting on the bench with the Icelandic first team coach and will take over from him after these Euros. It is about continuity Gareth Southgate coach of our under 21's wasn't even in the 1st team set up at these Euros's, English players should come up through the under 17's, under 19's, under 21's gaining experience along the way and THEN the first team and if they refuse to play for the youth team they are eligible for because they feel it beneath them then they should not be considered for an international cap at senior level ever.

I believe that's the way the Germans do it, and they seem to have a rather successful track-record at international level.
Another dissapointing game during euro......, hope the rest will be more exciting...
Wales playing very well in the first half against Belgium. An enjoyable game. Hope the three first-half bookings aren't their undoing in the second half.
Things getting even better Mike, what a goal that was!
Belgium will say they should have had two penalties in the second half. Whatever. A brilliant performance by Wales. Well done boys!
Wales in his history!
Should add, what a thoroughly entertaining game, in contrast to last night's Poland v Portugal encounter. I'm really looking forward to Italy v Germany tomorrow now.
Great win by Wales! Shame that Ramsey will be a spectator versus Portugal.

Hopefully he'll be back for the final, Hook. It's only Portugal that stand in their way.

Ah, no worries then.
