plug fuse and other questions

Posted by: HiFIoli on 13 June 2016

i recently got my nap90 back from class a and but upon discovering the issue some time ago i read in the manual online a 13a fuse is supposed to be used in the plug and it was infac the internal fuse that was blowing each time i switched it on, however only a 3a was in my plug at the time that as far as i'm aware was the orginal, i have since put a 13a in its all running ok

class a said to put the 3a back in to be safe, but this is bothering me with the fact the manual says to use a 13a fuse???

the other question i need advice on is using this with my dac, which as guided some time ago on this forum is an audioquest dragonfly, i tried to implement a logical sytem for setting the volume to the same level as the cd player i have which is arround 82-86,  the dac goes upto 100 of course and i think i used it at arround 96 or so once, i also know know the amp is underpowred for the epos es14s im using ,

is there a level i "should" be using this at,  i use foorbar player and have it set to event wasapi mode which i believe is the best method for sending music out.

thanks

Re: the fuse, you are best directing that to Naim rather than get opinions on the forum since it touches on a matter of perceived safety. A 3A fuse is functionally perfectly fine for nearly all hifi equipment because they have fairly low current draw. My understanding is that 13A are recommended because they sound better. The vast majority of the world uses plugs with no fuse at all.

No idea what the current UK/EU safety regulations and laws are concerning the supplying of cables with certain fuses. Suffice to say that if Naim answer your question you will have an answer as it stands at this point in time rather than something historical from a few years ago which may be outdated.

You might be better putting the other question in another thread since it is better to keep one thread = one topic.

The fuse in the plug is there to protect the flex - do not confuse this with the case or inlet fuse that is there to protect against catastrophic breakdown of the kit (if you have ever seen electronic kit burn, you'll know just how critical this is).   NEVER try to replace the case/inlet fuse with anything that's not exactly like for like.

Regarding the fuse in the mains plug - The fact that you have a 3A fuse in the plug of the mains lead you are using with your NAP90 seems to indicate it may not be original.  Rather than second guess, best advice from me would be to replace with a new Naim mains lead, which will come with an MK mains plug fitted with a 13A fuse.

As to your second question, please do start a new thread as I will now close this one.
