NDac + Oppo 105D vs Ndac +Naim Dvd 5
Posted by: Yang on 14 June 2016
Hi All,
I will appreciate if you can share your opinions on this matter:
At the moment I am using Oppo 105D as Transport for the NDac. I've seen a Naim DVD-5 Demo unit offer for sale.
Will Ndac+ Naim Dvd5 better than NDac +Oppo105D?
What about Ndac +Naim Dvd 5 Vs Ndac + Naim cd5 xs?
(Currently ,I am connetcing the oppo to Ndac via coaxial cable , and Ndac to NAc282 via Naim hiline.)
Thank you and best Regards
Yang
I'd stick with the Oppo. The DVD5 is quite old now.
Not what you were asking exactly ... but one option you have with the Oppo is to add the "Audiopraise Vanity HD" board which can then be configured to output DSD via the DoP (DSD over PCM) method and so you should be able to play (2 channel) SACDs via the naimDAC.

Eloise ,thanks for the advise ! I am asking this it's because there are some opinions saying that Naim transport with Naim Ndac will sound better than Naim NDac with Oppo. But I dont have a chance to demo it over here. That's why I am seeking opnions from seasoned naimer here.

I'd still stay with the Oppo. It's also a half-decent streamer if you require that.
It's worth bearing mind that the DVD5, being a DVD player, is not as slick to use as a dedicated CD transport. In fact it can sometimes be downright annoying. It performs well with the Naim DAC in my experience but not quite up to my preferred Meridian. There's an overall warmth to the sound (at least when using a Naim DC1 coaxial i/c) that you may well like, but I found just a touch too cloying.
Sorry not an experience user but as far as I know oppo's power supply unit create lots of noise. Maybe try plugging it else where away from the HiFi stuff and see if it helps with SQ? If it does then it's a free upgrade. Just my 2 cents.
Could be worth a try. I have the latest generation 105 Darbee and thought it had a linear PS. It sits quite happily in my system and I've not heard any negative effects on SQ not unless my hearing is going down the tubes!
There is an advantage to Oppo 105 - it can play any format discs currently available (inlcuding BluRay audio).
It also has multi-channel analogue outputs for playing back SuperAudio CDs, DVD-Audio and BluRay audio in 5.1.
I've tested my Oppo 105 and CDX2.2 - both used as a digital transport. They both work very well, CDX2.2 being a little more detailed and engaging. But it's not a night and day difference. They just sound a bit different, but not better or worse.
So - Oppo 105 would still get my vote.
Thank you very much for all your input ! The verdict is very clear ! I will save the money for Dac PS upgrade instead !
Best regards !
