From Nap 250 to 500 for Ovator 600
Posted by: rsch on 15 June 2016
It's a couple of weeks now that the S600 have replaced SL2s. Although there are many positives over the former, there are other aspects of performance of which i struggle to live with.
While the lower end of the spectrum seems fine to my ears, the mid bass (especially with electric bass and synths) it's sometimes too bold and overhelming. Probably like secondary effect the upper mid is not so clear like the SL2s.
I also noticed that bass and baritone voices are very nice, a tad less so soprano's, Another one, is with notes decay and reverberations of acoustic instruments, This morning i was playing "Le Chant De Leshiquer" cd of "Tasto Solo ensemble" and the hammered clavisimbalum seemed a bit opaque and not so harmonically rich.
Since there is the opportunity close to me of a recent Nap 500. i' m really tempted to upgrade my 250 with it.
My question is now if anyone of you did such route with Ovators.
Regards
Roberto

Hope you get to hear them singing, impressive speakers in my room.

Thanks Hutch, I thought the BMR was only associated with the Snaxo 800's!

""Firstly, BMR is a development on NXT technology. As I understand it, the whole surface of the BMR vibrates in a non-linear fashion reproducing the frequency range across the surface, as opposed to attempting to move the complete surface pistonically. So it's much more like a panel or electrostatic than a traditional driver, whether full range or not.
2ndly, unlike a fullrange driver the BMR doesn't beam heavily at high frequencies and maintains its dispersion. This certainly seems to affect its presentation quite heavily.
3rdly, the BMR extends far further than a traditional full range driver, but less than a supertweeter.
Note there are two Ovator BMRs currently - the unit in the S-400 is smaller than the one in the S-600.""

Frank.

Always nice to pick up info.
Kind of explains why many view the sound of the Ovators different from traditional speakers!

Hi Hutch,
Actually mine are from 2010 and i' m pretty much sure they belonged to another fellow forumee. However, since the BMR leaf springs have been replaced, the dealer told me that some run in is required.
Anyway, with my last adjustments, run in or simply my brain, i have partially to revise some of my impression exposed above.
Now, especially the midrange seems sweeter and more " out of the box" with the mid bass apparently less rumbling too.
Early this morning i played a few tracks from " The Smiths" eponymous cd, either an early Rough Trade edition and a mid '90s Wea edition and boy, it has been a truly truly inspiring exprerience ! Morrisey's voice really out of the box and generally a realistic sense of scale. ( on Rough Trade edition, voice was a little more vivid and alive perhaps)
I think that with another few tweaks, may be a bass trap and possibly a better amp, they should be pretty much perfect
Regards
Roberto

Nothing like new shocks, to smooth out a musical journey. It's also nice to have an well informed Dealer!
Glade things are working out, Hutch may have hit the nail on the head, a bit more run-in time!
Enjoy your Music!

Almost forgot about the run in time for Ovator 600: 6-9 months in my case. Never had a Hifi product that took that long. Not even close.
Today they live with my friend and his family, together with a Melco N1A-272-250DR-Super Lumina loop-Fraim. Sounds brutal. Absolutely brutal in that room.

Jonas,
Do you mean it in a positive way or the opposite ?

I can imagine with new BMR leaf springs the BMR will take a little time to settle and find its mojo. Another issue to check after having your Ovator's in place for a few weeks is their stability on spikes, I did find a need to readjust mine and it made a very nice improvement.

Jonas what is wrong with the sound from your friends system? Can you describe what you mean by 'brutal'. Thanks
Simon

I had them for 10 months....In the end they proved too tricky to integrate with my room using a 252/300. I spent more time tweaking than listening with any real pleasure.
The S400 on the other hand...

Sorry for the confusion. In Swedish, in that context, that would be something great. So, they sound very good...

Very interesting, sounds like the upgraded version is a bit finicky!
Just goes to show, if one is fortunate enough to own speakers, that suits HIS taste, and HIS rooms environment, don't mess with the Speakers!
Beit, 400's, 600's, SL2, DBL,s, Briks,etc....
If you like it, Live with it!!!
Just tinker with the front end!

But, if you got some extra cash laying around and nothing else to spend it on, the SL Full Loom will do!!!! LOL!!!!

And guess what, if you haven't had the opportunity to demo a shortlist proposed by the Forum, that's a good thing.
As long as YOU are satisfied!
