Nat 01 Tuner

Posted by: Bob the Builder on 16 June 2016

I am going to look at a Nat 01 on Saturday details are a bit vague except that it is in 'very clean' condition which in itself is quite vague,  however I am close by and looking and hearing will cost nothing.  So apart from early CB units having a vacuum display that cannot be replaced by Naim and that as always cosmetic condition is key are there any other pitfalls or things that I should be aware of when buying a Nat 01?

It's just on top of the 250 for a quick photo I bought them together,  if I decide to keep them which isn't 100%  I will use them as a completely separate 2nd system adding a 72 maybe. From what I have heard so far using a bog standard aerial it is a very special source especially with the Olive 250,  but it's quality isn't was never in question  wether or not I can justify it for the amount of use it will get most definetly is.  It was just a 'couldn't say no' offer so it may eventually get moved along to upgrade my main system. Does look lovely though and I have to say even with the indoor aerial the sound reproduction especially with voices is a very special thing

Took the plunge and even with indoor aerial sounds beautiful

Looks great. Never liked the look of the full width olive preamps (buttons looked crap) but the half width kit and the power amps (both sizes) look timeless.

Enjoy

I had a hand written letter from Seville yesterday but who do I know in Seville? No one, NO! not that mad Dutch couple we met on holiday I didn't get that drunk  I gave them my address did I, did they say they lived in Seville? No they lived in San Sebastian anyway I open up the letter and it is from George Smith son of Ron Smith of Ron Smith Aerials, If you look above I had emailed him for a quote for an aerial and he replied with a full and detailed report and quote, well concerned that his reply to my email had not appeared in his Sent box he printed it off and sent it by post with a hand written cover note from Spain.  Now that is either very clever sales strategy as now I feel compelled to buy Ron Smith aerials for my Nat 01/NDX (if I trade it in) my TV even though I have cable my the radio in my bedroom and the small one in my kitchen or it is just about the best service I have ever had.

Shame they're going on eBay but someone else's gain I guess!

It's easy to let the heart rule the head and spend say £1500 on the tuner, service, aerial and installation and then use it for two hours a week listening to radio 3 and 4. And then if you need planning it's a few hundred more. That's not to say it's not lovely sounding of course. But would the tuner module suffice? With a simple five element roof aerial it works very well.

HH,

I agree too that a tuner module will be worthwhile considering.

Can you share your experiences of the FM module in the context of your 272? Do you (can you?) actually disable the module with you are not using it ? I am concerned if adding this module will really degrade the sonic performance. Have you compared with another 272 without this option ?

If there is a better sounding tuner on the planet I have never heard it.
