vTuner

Is it possible to play uncompressed streams (flac etc.) via vTuner on the NDS?
Thanks.
Anybody?
I tried manually adding a couple of streams but receive the "Can't connect" message on the NDS. I'm not sure if it's a wireless bandwidth issue or a vTuner/NDS issue.
I had quick look at the vTuner www but could not find anything other than internet radio, so I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Thinking logically it has to be a vTuner issue as the NDS will play anything when its connected to a normal server or internet data stream. Have you tried contacting vTuner?
I think I may have found the problem. The URL that was pasted into vTuner that did now work was an uncompressed stream. Checking the firmware today shows that (contrary to the dealer assertations) it is NOT the latest one, but the very outdated 3.3 version. Which does not support uncompressed internet radio streams apparently.
So I have d/l the ver 4.4 firmware and will proceed with the upgrade once I have gotten hold of a mini USB wire with data hookup.
BTW, does the 4.4 change the sonic signature of the NDS, or just add a few options? Sounds fine with the 3.3 firmware.
Depends what you mean by sonic signature, that sounds a bit dramatic to me. Its hard to remember the previous version let alone back to the 3 series, but on my NDX the various stages of firmware have steadily improved all aspects of SQ. The changes are usually small & subtle, but going from 3 something to 4.4 you will probably notice something more than subtle; it adds streaming services like Tidal & Spotify which you can use or not, but the big one for me is it also enables the ability to play DSD material & that is something a bit different & not to be missed. I really do not see any reason not to update as & when each revision becomes available,
Sonic signature of NDS running 4.4 is just fine...
Where do you find uncompressed radio streams? and any good ones.

There's Europa Radio Jazz streamed in 1000 kb/s FLAC. Which is useless until I get the 4.4 firmware installed on this NDS. USB-mini USB cable came today, but I may be returning it to its owner this weekend, in which case I won't to through the 17 page installation guide on how to update the firmware. Why could it not be as simple as it is on the nDAC??
Hello Ron
I've tried to configure and play the Europa Jazz and Absolute Radio uncompressed iRadio streams without any luck on my Uniti with the latest streamer hardware and 4.4 firmware which I think should be similar in streaming functionality to you NDS. I could be doing something wrong, the vTuner facility is pretty limited and poor in my opinion. The stream doesn't start and the Naim app on the iPad just shows "stop stream".
If you happen to be running Minim Server on a NAS or suchlike you can play all of these uncompressed iRadio streams. I can get both these streams to play quite happily. I have Minimserver setup to transcode these to WAV format to the Uniti. I can describe how to do it this if you want to try it.
Hi Calumm, I'd like to hear how you get the streams to play please
Here’s how I get these flac radio streams to play using Minimserver on a NAS and a Naim streamer (Uniti).
This post ended up being a bit longer than I imagined. Hopefully you can still follow the 5 steps.
1. Create a playlist text file (e.g. RadioStations.m3u) and save it on your NAS.
If you place this file in a sub-folder of your scanned Music folder on the NAS then Minimserver will find it the next time you rescan.
Optional - you can place this file in it’s own folder on the NAS (not in your Music folder) and add this folder to the list of directories used by Minimserver (done on the Minimwatch app - add a contentDir via the Properties > Server tab). This is perhaps neater and easier to find if you have lots of playlists.
It is important that this text file is a plain text file and not a Word or RTF or other type, otherwise Minimserver won’t be able to read the contents.
2. The playlist file you create should contain this:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1,[*ERJ] Europa Radio Jazz
http://www.europaradiojazz.org/stream.flac.m3u
#EXTINF:-1,[*ARCR] Absolute Radio Classic Rock
http://icecast.timlradio.co.uk...dio.co.uk/acflac.ogg
This tells Minimserver to place 2 items in the playlist. There are two lines for each radio station. You can add more. The first line of the entry is the ID and name you want to display for the station. The second line is the web address for the station.
So to add another station you would add 2 lines supplying your own made up station_id, station_name and the web station_address:
#EXTINF:-1,[*station_id] station_name
station_address
The * in front of the station_id is important as it makes Minimserver stream the radio station through Minimserver on the NAS then to the streamer rather than direct from web address to the streamer.
The station_id you give each radio station should be unique. Minim server won’t list duplicates.
3. You then need to add/update an entry in the Minimserver server configuration to ensure that Minimserver has a default transcode setting for any stream. To do this, open Minimwatch and select the Properties optioned go to the System tab. In the stream.transcode field, add an entry *:wav24. This setting will cause your radio stream (and any digital music file) to be transcoded to wav 24 bit by default unless you have specified a specific transcode setting.
For example, my stream.transcode entry has two entries separated by a comma, one specifically for dsf files and one for anything else - dsf:wav24;176, *:wav24
This example means that all music files on my NAS (flac, alac, mp3) are transcode to wav 24-bit apart from dsf which are instead transcoded to wav 24 bit and 176 kHz.
4. That’s it. Do a rescan of Minimserver (using Minimwatch, select Rescan).
5. To access your radio stations in the Naim app, go to UPnP. In the top level list will be a x playlists folder. Select it and your new playlist should be there. Open it and your radio stations should be listed. Select play for the entry you want. If this works correctly it should play and you will see that the sample rate and bandwidth is listed - which is the sample rate of the original stream e.g. 44.1 kHz.
6. Optional - If you want album art for the radio channels, place a jpg or png file in the folder you created and give the file the same name as the station_name you used above e.g. Europa Radio Jazz.jpg
Hopefully I haven’t missed anything.
I have all my radio stations setup this way including the BBC ones. I put the radio stations into different playlist files to keep them organised and easy to find.
